STAPLES CENTER TO BE PRIMARY VENUE OF NEXT TWO X GAMES

ESPN announced today that it has selected L.A. to host the next two X Games, beginning with the ninth annual event, August 14-18, 2003. Staples Center will serve as the primary venue for the X Games and will host a majority of the competitions. The L.A. Coliseum will host the Moto X Freestyle event over a two-night period. AEG represented the city in reaching the agreement (THE DAILY).


THREE SPORTING GOOD RETAILERS POST Q3 '02 RESULTS TODAY

Foot Locker, The Sports Authority and Galyan's Trading today reported financial results for Q3 '02. Foot Locker's sales were $1.12B, up 3.3% from $1.08B in the comparable year ago period. The Sports Authority's sales were $309.3M, a 1.5% increase over sales of $304.8M for the same period last year. Galyan's Trading posted sales of $129.8M, up 23.7% from $104.9M from Q3 '01 (THE DAILY).


NOTARI EXPRESSES OLYMPIC CONCERNS TO ROGGE IN CUBA

The AP reports Int'l Baseball Federation President Aldo Notari said that MLB "could help ensure that the sport stays in the Olympics beyond 2008 by allowing its players to compete." While attending the Intercontinental Baseball Cup in Cuba, Notari "expressed his concerns" to IOC President Jacques Rogge, who was also at the tournament. Notari: "If the big leagues say they will send their best players to the Olympic Games in Beijing, the problem will be resolved." Rogge said that "the issue would probably not be decided at a meeting of the IOC general assembly later this month in Mexico City, as had been earlier expected" (AP, 11/21).


BUZZER BEATERS

Charles Barkley said yesterday that he "would honor his ill-advised bet with TNT co-analyst Kenny Smith by smooching his colleague's rear-end" on his weekly talk show tonight at 7:00pm ET. Barkley said he would kiss part of Smith's anatomy if Rockets C Yao Ming scored 19 points in a game. Yao proceeded to score 20 points two nights later (ESPN.com, 11/21).

As expected, CART and Ford Motor Company today announced a two-year agreement, under which the CART series will now be known as "Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered By Ford" (THE DAILY).

The ECONOMIC TIMES reported that Nike "has shelved its plans of setting up a wholly-owned subsidiary" in India, instead deciding to renew its contract with licensee Sierra Industrial Enterprises (ECONOMIC TIMES, 11/20).

Skechers USA today opened its first flagship store in Canada in Toronto's Eaton Centre. The 3,400-square-foot location reflects Skechers' global strategy to further build its brand by showcasing a complete offering of its products (THE DAILY).

The MIAMI HERALD reported that the LPGA will conduct drawings at this week's ADT Championship "to offer fans a chance to get closer to the tour's stars." Today's winner will be invited to meet HOFer Beth Daniel and Rookie of the Year Beth Bauer. Winners on Friday and Saturday "get the chance to walk all 18 holes inside the ropes the next day," and Sunday's winner will participate in the award ceremony (MIAMI HERALD, 11/19).

The AHL announced today that Pepsi will title sponsor the AHL All-Star Skills Competition, to be held February 2 at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, ME (THE DAILY).

The WHL Everett, WA, expansion franchise today announced that its team name will be the Silvertips (THE DAILY).

Hat World, a specialty headwear retailer, has completed the purchase of Hat Zone, a 14-store chain focused primarily on athletic headwear. Hat World currently operates 159 Hat World and 269 Lids stores nationwide (THE DAILY).

Sports Systems Services has added the NIT as its third Web-hosting client. Current clients are the athletic departments of Manhattan College and St. Joseph's Univ. (THE DAILY).

In the wake of the Breeders' Cup betting scandal, the WASHINGTON POST's Andrew Beyer writes that while "it is doubtful that the sport has learned all the necessary lessons arising from this jolt to its public image," the horse racing industry "is calling on some heavy firepower as it tries to correct its problems, and its effort merits respect," including former N.Y. Mayor Rudy Giuliani (WASHINGTON POST).

The DETROIT NEWS' Jason Deegan writes, "The financial impact of the Motor City Bowl moving to downtown Detroit from Pontiac is uncertain, but one thing isn't – downtown businesses are welcoming the game with great anticipation," as financial impact estimates range from $10.5-20M (DETROIT NEWS).

The SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE's Tim Sullivan writes that while Title IX is 30 years old, the testimony at the U.S. Department of Education's Commission on Opportunity in Athletics town hall meeting "would indicate the argument about it hasn't been advanced so much as a centimeter" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE).
