NHL PANTHERS TO PLAY IN OFFICE DEPOT CENTER

The NHL Panthers and Office Depot today formally entered into a ten-year naming rights agreement for the Panthers' home arena to be called the Office Depot Center. Office Depot will have an on-site retail presence and will plan in-store promotions throughout the year, to include player appearances (THE DAILY).


SHOE RETAILER TO MAKE FURTHER CUTS ON NIKE ORDERS

The Portland OREGONIAN reports that Foot Locker revealed yesterday in an SEC filing that it might reduce purchases from Nike by $150-250M, or 14-23%. Analysts say that "Nike rivals such as Adidas-Salomon, New Balance and Reebok stand to pick up that business." The announcement comes a few weeks after Nike said that Foot Locker had "significantly scaled back its orders for fall delivery as it focuses more on sneakers costing less than $120." Foot Locker accounted for about 11% of Nike's business in its fiscal year that ended in May, and the cuts "could equate to about 3 percent of Nike's $9.9 billion in annual sales" (Portland OREGONIAN, 9/13).


VISA REMOVES WORLD CUP TRADEMARK FROM WEB SITE

The London GUARDIAN reports that Visa has been "plunged into a legal battle" with FIFA after it used the World Cup trademark without permission. FIFA was "particularly annoyed by the fact Visa had plastered the World Cup trademark" all over its Web site in Brazil and "refused to withdraw the promotion" when asked by FIFA. After receiving written notification that FIFA was going "to institute court proceedings – and following a series of deliberations"– Visa "agreed to remove the … promotion" from its Web site (London GUARDIAN, 9/13).


SUZUKI INCREASES COMMITMENT IN FOURTH YEAR OF PARTNERSHIP

American Suzuki Motor Corp. today announced the "first-ever 'presenting' sponsorship of the Heisman Memorial Trophy" by its Automotive, Motorcycle and Marine divisions. In its fourth year of partnership, Suzuki will receive exclusive "presenting" sponsorship rights and will partner with ESPN Magazine for a ten-game mobile college football tour. The tour will "provide fans with Heisman-themed interactive games, product displays, giveaways, music, and a photo opportunity" with the '02 Heisman Trophy (THE DAILY).


BUZZER BEATERS

GOLF WORLD BUSINESS reports that Luke Reese has resigned as VP & GM of Wilson Golf, effective immediately. Wilson Golf President Jim Baugh, reassumes the task of running Wilson Golf. Both Baugh and Reese affirmed that Reese left Wilson Golf of his own accord and on good terms (GOLF WORLD BUSINESS, 9/13).

The CNN Airport Network will air all 11 Saturday TBS 7:00pm ET college football games, featuring the Pac-10 and Big 12 conferences, starting tomorrow with the UNLV-Oregon St. game (THE DAILY).

Trend Micro, a network anti-virus and Internet content security solutions provider, today announced its title sponsorship of the fifth annual Champions Challenge Golf Tournament, to be played at Johnny Miller's signature course – Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, Utah (THE DAILY).

The S.F. CHRONICLE reports that tonight's Mariners-A's telecast, when viewed with the SAP option, will feature "the commentary of announcers Greg Papa and Ray Fosse mixed with the instructions (Producer/Director Mark) Wolfson gives to the broadcasters, photographers and other members of the crew" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 9/13).

The Columbia STATE reports that tomorrow's South Carolina-Georgia game "will be the first game at Williams-Brice Stadium televised in high definition" (Columbia STATE, 9/13).

Grand Prix Americas has signed Cadillac, Lalique, The Collection and Mumm as sponsors for the October 4-6 race in Miami (THE DAILY).

WUSA Freedom M/F Mia Hamm, Breakers F Kristine Lilly and '99 World Cup member Michelle Akers will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the 7:05pm ET Orioles-Red Sox game (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/12).

The Astros will host Hispanic Heritage Day during tonight's 7:05pm CT game against the Cardinals. The first 10,000 fans in attendance will receive a Jose Cruz collectible card to commemorate his induction into the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum (THE DAILY).

Astros 1B Jeff Bagwell will host a group of 5,700 Houston-area youths and their families at "DK57 Day" prior to the 12:15pm CT game against the Cardinals. Dedicated to the memory of late Cardinals P Darryl Kyle, Bagwell will provide tickets, transportation, lunch and T-shirts for all participants (THE DAILY).

Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas will be given the Governor's Award for lifetime achievement by the local chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (THE DAILY).

Tony Hawk and other skateboarders will perform a 30-minute demonstration at UB Stadium prior to the Connecticut-Univ. at Buffalo football game at 7:30pm ET (BUFFALO NEWS, 9/12).

The CHICAGO TRIBUNE reports that the newspaper is "strongly considering launching another newspaper in the Chicago area–this one aimed at the MTV crowd" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 9/13).

The TORONTO SUN reports that a "21-year-old Queensville woman dubbed 'Mrs. Stronach' by co-workers" has filed a $250,000 lawsuit against Magna Int'l CEO Frank Stronach, "claiming he treated her in an inappropriate manner that caused her anxiety and fear" (TORONTO SUN, 9/13).

"Active Reach %" = the number of unique Web users viewing a Web site one or more times, expressed as a percentage of the total active Web population for this week (i.e. 5.4% of Web users accessing the Internet from home viewed a site on ESPN at least once this time period). "Average Time Spent" = the average amount of time a visitor has spent at that property for the month. The data is based on audience measurement of more than 50,000 U.S. panelists who have Internet access at home and 7,000 U.S. panelists who have Internet access at work. Traffic to these sites are the predominant URLs, and are grouped to include commonly-owned sites (NetRatings).
