SOURCE: REPORT ON MLBPA SEPTEMBER STRIKE DATE IN ERROR

In an exclusive to THE DAILY, the SportsBusiness Journal's Liz Mullen cites an MLBPA source as saying that the union sent out a memo to players today, saying that the report the union will set a strike date of September 16 is in error.  The memo told players that the union leaders are continuing to meet with clubs, and the union's executive board has yet to decide on whether to set a date.  The date of September 16 has been the one most frequently mentioned in the last week.  Prior to that, there was speculation that the union could set a date of August 16 or September 1 (THE DAILY).

On his afternoon segment on ABC Radio today, Keith Olbermann said, "Setting the 16th as a date to potentially shut down the season for good is not merely stupid, it's suicidal."   It "means the story of your impending strike ... will be at the forefront of the public consciousness" the week of September 11.  The entire week "will be as solemn with remembrance as any in American history" (ABC Radio, 7/22).

BetWWTS.com today became the first established bookmaker to announce odds on baseball's current tribulations.  The MLBPA deciding to strike before the end of this season has 5/7 odds, while the MLB season being completed is listed at even (1/1) (THE DAILY).

CHARLOTTE EXPECTED TO APPROVE NBA NEGOTIATIONS TONIGHT

The CHARLOTTE OBSERVER reported that, following a citizens' forum at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center tonight, a majority of City Council members "will likely give City Manager Pam Syfert the go-ahead to work out a lease arrangement with the NBA."  NBA officials "are expected to come to Charlotte the first or second week in August" for the negotiations (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 7/21).

IT'S MILLER TIME FOR PACKERS; TEAM ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP

The Packers formally announced today that the organization has entered into a long term, exclusive partnership agreement with Miller Brewing Company and its statewide distributors.  Features of the 10-year partnership include Miller sponsorship of the main entrance gate at Lambeau Field's new Titletown Atrium, as well as signage throughout facility (THE DAILY).

The L.A. TIMES reviews the NBAE's "Los Angeles Lakers 2001-2002 NBA Champions" video, which will be available starting tomorrow, and states that the "star of the video is Shaquille O'Neal, whose comedic and emotional sides are on full display.  One moment, he's singing about the Kings' Vlade Divac on the team bus, the next he's tenderly holding his baby daughter after the last game with the Nets" (L.A. TIMES, 7/22).
