SQUEEZE PLAY: ASTROS TO PLACE MINUTE MAID NAME ON BALLPARK

Astros Owner Drayton McLane Jr. today announced a deal with the Coca-Cola Co. to rename Astros Field, which will now be called Minute Maid Park. An Astros spokesperson said McLane was "very comfortable" with the 28-year deal and added that the agreement was "close to what the owner wanted, which puts it in the $185-million category" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 6/5). The partnership also includes pouring rights for Coca-Cola products, ongoing advertising and marketing programs and a commitment by Minute Maid to support Houston-based youth baseball programs. McLane said that prior to the Astros' homestand that begins Monday, temporary Minute Maid Park signage will be placed in the ballpark, but "to do the signage the way it should be done and represent Minute Maid and the Coca-Cola company, it will take a period of time. I would imagine it will take two months, but it could be quicker than that" (MLB.com, 6/5).
