BAUER FIRES BACK AT OCTAGON FOR ALLEGED INTERFERENCE

The SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL reports this afternoon that sports agent Frank Bauer, who signed and then lost likely No. 1 NFL draft pick David Carr, “filed a lawsuit Friday accusing Octagon of unfair competition and interfering with a contract.” Bauer claims in a suit filed in S.F. Superior Court that Octagon employees conspired to get Carr away from him. Bauer is claiming damages of more than $1M. The suit names Octagon Football, Octagon Marketing and Athlete Representation Inc. and The Interpublic Group of Cos., Octagon’s parent corporation, as defendants. Octagon officials could not immediately be reached for comment (SPORTSBUSINESSJOURNAL.com, 4/19).


SIRIUS TO PROMOTE BRAND NAME VIA SPEEDWAY PARTNERSHIP

Sirius Satellite Radio today announced at the Talladega Superspeedway that it has signed a marketing partnership with Int’l Speedway Corp.’s 12 tracks to promote the Sirius brand and seek to build subscriber activations for Sirius' in-vehicle entertainment service. As part of its multi-year agreement, Sirius will title sponsor two NASCAR Winston Cup events -- the Sirius Satellite Radio 400 at Michigan Int’l Speedway in June and the Sirius Satellite Radio at Watkins Glen in August (THE DAILY).


HARRINGTON, WILLIAMS HUDDLE UP FOR EA SPORTS “MADDEN” ADS

NFL prospects – including Joey Harrington, Roy Williams and Bryant McKinnie – will appear in an upcoming series of advertisements for EA Sports’ “NFL Madden 2003” video game. The ads, which will debut during the TV coverage of this weekend’s NFL Draft, depict how the athletes feel about being featured in the simulation game (THE DAILY).


“DR. FUNK” RECRUITS FELLOW NBA ALL-STARS FOR NEW NIKE AD

Nike will unearth more rare ABA basketball footage for the company’s next “Dr. Funk” advertisement starring Raptors G Vince Carter. In the new ad, entitled “Roswell Rayguns,” Carter will be joined by fellow NBA stars Paul Pierce, Baron Davis, Jermaine O’Neal and Jerry Stackhouse. The ad breaks on Saturday (THE DAILY).


SPORTS EMPLOYMENT WEB SITE SETS ITS SIGHTS ON BIG EASY

The New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE reports that Charlotte-based SportsPersonnel.com will meet in New Orleans today with “representatives from the Louisiana Department of Economic Development, the city and investors who have offered $3 million in initial financing.” The company hopes to relocate to LA and develop its Web site “into a national sports career network with a staff of 50,” which would serve coaches, players and administrators who want to post resumes and stats for recruiters to peruse (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 4/19).


FIFA CONTROVERSIES HIT MIAMI BEACH THIS WEEKEND

AROUND THE RINGS reports that the “latest chapter in the drama over the presidency of FIFA” will be played out this weekend in Miami, where CONCACAF will hold its Congress. CONCACAF President Jack Warner, a stalwart of FIFA President Sepp Blatter, is expected to be re-elected, despite his being the “target of investigative reports from the U.K. that intimate the Trinidadian has used his FIFA connections for personal gain” (AROUND THE RINGS, 4/19).


WALTON PROMISES A LONG, STRANGE TRIP DURING NBA PLAYOFFS

NBA TV analyst Bill Walton is set to go “on the road not with the Grateful Dead, as was the case so many times previously, but for 30 NBA playoff games.” Walton will do weekend games for NBC and file daily reports for NBA.com and NBA TV. Walton is even promising tie-dyed t-shirts for the affair, saying, “The Magical Mystery Tour is under way. … [The shirts are] being printed as we speak. Headbands, all kinds of stuff . . . flowered dresses for the ladies” (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 4/18).


BUZZER BEATERS

The LOUISVILLE COURIER-JOURNAL reports that Saturday’s Opening Ceremonies to the Kentucky Derby Festival, known locally as “Thunder Over Louisville,” looks “bright, loud and colorful thanks to the Kentucky Derby Festival's efforts to secure major corporate sponsorship from Caesars Indiana, Ford Motor Co., Radio One, Thornton Oil Corp., Tricon and UPS.” The festival starts at 3:00pm ET and concludes with a short concert by country singer LeAnn Rimes (LOUISVILLE COURIER-JOURNAL, 4/19).

The Thrashers hosted the Fire Dept. of N.Y. (FDNY) vs. the Atlanta Police Dept. (APD)hockey teams following the Devils-Thrashers game on April 5. The evening raised over $25,000 for the Widows & Orphans of 9/11 Fund, including $9,353.13 collected during the boot drive (THE DAILY).

The USTA today announced that a street clinic, tennis carnival and wheelchair clinic will be conducted in Charlotte in conjunction with the U.S.-Austria Fed Cup competition at the Olde Providence Racquet Club April 27-28 (THE DAILY)

REUTERS reports that, according to a regulatory filing with the SEC, Foot Locker CFO Bruce Hartman this month “sold 50,000 shares in the No. 1 U.S. athletic shoe retailer.” Hartman, who was named Exec VP on Thursday, “made his sales in six separate transactions on April 1” for a total of $795,414 (REUTERS, 4/19).

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' BOG “has voted to bestow the L.A. Area Governors Award to [Lakers] broadcasting legend Chick Hearn.” The awards “will be presented at the L.A. Area Emmy Awards on June 29 at the academy's Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood” (ELECTRONIC MEDIA, 4/18).


WEEKEND EVENTS

Friday

The USOC Exec Committee will meet in closed session at the Boston Marriott Copley Place, followed by a media briefing at 5:00pm ET (THE DAILY). USA TODAY reports that the committee will “consider setting an Aug. 31 deadline” for USA Track & Field to “come in compliance” on several issues, including anti-doping matters (USA TODAY, 4/19).

Knicks G Mark Jackson, NBC and TNT analyst Peter Vecsey and Nets analyst Bill Raftery will present a ‘02 NBA Playoffs preview at the NBA Store in N.Y. at 5:00pm ET. Nets announcer Ian Eagle will host the event (THE DAILY).

The Astros have scheduled a 6:00pm CT press conference in the Diamond Club Press Conference Room to make a major announcement (THE DAILY).

To recognize U.S. soldiers and their families, Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse will have ten-year-old Harley Andruszka - daughter of Sergeant First Class John Andruszka - throw the first pitch at tonight’s Rangers-Mariners game (THE DAILY).

Saturday

The Steelers will host the ’02 Fan Blitz in conjunction with the NFL Draft from noon-8:00pm ET at Heinz Field. Current and former players will attend and sign autographs in the locker room (THE DAILY).

The Redskins will hold their draft party Saturday at FedEx Field and will allow fans to chose their own season tickets from the last remaining Club Seats for the ‘02 season. Fans will also be addressed on Saturday by new coach Steve Spurrier and defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis (THE DAILY).

The Braves will conduct a baseball skills clinic for members of Special Olympics GA at Turner Field (THE DAILY).

The Yahoo Sports NBA Rhythm ‘n Rims tour will launch, traveling 20,000 miles and visiting 18 markets through Labor Day weekend. The first stop on the tour occurs this weekend in Atlanta, followed by Miami on April 27-28 (THE DAILY).

Eighty Nike Golf Learning Centers across the U.S. will provide new golfers with an introduction to the sport during “New Golfer Day” on Saturday. The event will feature complimentary instruction, etiquette and rules seminars (THE DAILY).

The AFL Tampa Storm will hold Education Night at the Ice Place during Saturday’s season-opening game. A portion of each ticket sold will be donated to Hillsborough County Public Schools (THE DAILY).

The Neville Brothers will perform at the Family Circle Tennis Center at the center’s Clubcourt at 8:30pm ET (THE DAILY).

The fifth annual Tiger Jam benefit concert, presented by Coca-Cola and hosted by Tiger Woods, will be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Comedians Dennis Miller and Kevin James will appear, while musical artists Don Henley and Train will perform (THE DAILY).

Sunday

All fans attending the NHL’s Hurricanes-Devils Eastern Conference Quarterfinal Game Three at Continental Airlines Arena on Sunday will receive a commemorative “Join The crowd – Wear White” t-shirt to launch the “Wear White” campaigns. Fans have been encouraged to wear white to all playoff home games (THE DAILY).

The WASHINGTON POST reports that 11 public television stations “have committed to airing economic commentator Louis Rukeyser's CNBC debut this week, including both PBS stations” in N.Y. (WASHINGTON POST, 4/19).
