PICABO STREET GROUNDED AS WINDS POSTPONE DOWNHILL EVENTS

The AP reports that "high winds at the top of the Wildflower course forced postponement of the women's downhill" today. Despite calm conditions at the bottom of the course, "where about 25,000 spectators waited patiently in sub-freezing temperatures, winds buffeted the top of the course – 9,016 feet up Mount Ogden." The race "likely" will be rescheduled for Tuesday (AP, 2/11).

NBC's three-day primetime average for the '02 Winter Olympics is a 20.3/33, a 23% increase over CBS' Nagano three-day average of 16.5/27 in '98. NBC's coverage of the Salt Lake City Games Sunday night attracted 64 million viewers. NBC's primetime (8:00pm-11:07pm ET) national rating of a 17.6 outperformed ABC's 6.4/10 by 175%; Fox's 6.3/9 by 179%; and CBS' 6.1/9 by 189% (THE DAILY).

Campbell Soup and USOC CEO Lloyd Ward today named Natalie Granato, mother of U.S. women's hockey captain Cammi Granato, the company's Gold Medal Parent. Jeff and Ruth FitzRandolph, parents of speed skater Casey, were named as Silver Medalists, and Peggy Smith, mother of bobsledder Jill Bakken, was awarded the Bronze Medal. Campbell, in conjunction with the USOC, created the Campbell's SOUPer U.S. Olympic Parents Award to recognize the commitment and dedication of the many parents of U.S. Olympic hopefuls (THE DAILY).


AT THE ROOT OF THE FAD: CNBC LOOKS AT CLOTHING COMPANY

CNBC's Mike Hegudus profiled Toronto-based Roots, the closely-held designer and manufacturer of the U.S., Canadian and U.K Olympic teams. Roots co-Founder Michael Budman: "We were just amazed at the business you could do in this two-week period." This is the first year Roots has outfitted the U.S. team. Budman, on the company's success with Team Canada in '98, the first year which Roots outfitted the Canadian team: "Everything came together. The outfits came together. The team was the most successful Olympic team Canada ever had (and) our competitors in Nagano, if they tried, they could not have looked worse." Budman, on reaction to the '02 lines: "The sales have been phenomenal at retail already." Hegudus reported, "At the stores in Salt Lake City and in Park City [UT], the lines at the Roots outlets over this past weekend have sometimes been an hour long" (CNBC, 2/11).


ARENA VOTE COULD DECIDE HORNETS' FUTURE IN CHARLOTTE

The CHARLOTTE OBSERVER reports that Charlotte City Council members tonight "take up one of the most contentious issues they are likely to face in their political careers: whether to move ahead with an arena-building plan that could help keep the Hornets in Charlotte." Mayor Pro Tem Patrick Cannon: "This vote will determine whether Charlotte stagnates or progresses." Citizens on both sides of the issue "are expected to turn out in force at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 2/11).


ACTION TO TAKE STOCK IN NYSE, ADOPT NEW TICKER SYMBOL

AZ-based Action Performance Companies will transfer its stock listing to the NYSE effective February 20, 2002, and will trade under its new ticker symbol, ATN. Action Performance, which was trading at $38.40 in late afternoon trading, has been listed on the Nasdaq National Market under the ticker symbol ACTN since its IPO in '93 (THE DAILY).


WEATHER PERMITTING: PGA TOUR RE-UPS WITH WEATHER CHANNEL

The Weather Channel (TWC) inked a four-year renewal of its marketing deal with the PGA Tour. TWC will provide "The Weather Channel Forecast," an on-site weather alert program that includes updated weather information specific to event locations for all PGA Tour, Senior PGA Tour and Buy.com Tour events. Additionally, TWC viewers will gain insights as to how local weather conditions could affect future Tour events, as local forecasts for upcoming events will be highlighted on-air (THE DAILY).


CLUB MED, ATP ANNOUNCE TWO-YEAR PARTNERSHIP RENEWAL

The ATP and Club Med announced a two-year renewal of their partnership, which features an ATP Official Tennis Camp program designed by ATP instructors at Club Med's villages in Paradise Island, Punta Cana and Sandpiper. The partnership also includes an ATP player benefit program and a schedule of media inventory for the ATP's North American TV broadcasts (THE DAILY).


AD MONITOR: NBA GIVES THANKS, SPEED CHANNEL TAKES OFF

The NBA took out a full-page ad in today's Philadelphia Daily News, with the headline, "Thank You, Philadelphia!" The ad thanks the "Philadelphia Volunteer Community," who made the '02 NBA All-Star Jam Session a "fantastic experience for NBA fans." NBA Commissioner David Stern's signature is at the bottom of the ad (THE DAILY).

Speed Channel and Time Warner Cable took out a full-page ad in today's Charlotte Observer, with the headline, "MotorSports Will Never Look the Same." The ad promotes the fact that Speedvision will become the Speed Channel tonight, and states the channel will offer fans "the most complete coverage of Formula 1, CART, Speed World Challenge, ALMS, World Rally," NASCAR Winston Cup and more (THE DAILY).


BUZZER BEATERS

ESPN Classic Sport and the Lawn Tennis Association of America have reached a long-term agreement to showcase past matches on the new ESPN Classic Sport network in Europe. The net will show full-length matches, event highlights and retrospective programs from tournaments held primarily between '75 and '00 (THE DAILY).

The ECHL Mobile Mysticks today announced that continuing economic pressures, lack of growth in walk-up attendance and a decline in corporate sponsorships forced the team to suspend operations for the '02-03 season. Corporate sponsorships for the team dropped 53% this year, and the team lost several season ticket commitments for economic reasons and layoffs (THE DAILY).

The L.A. TIMES reports on Universal Studios Home Video's new title, "Muhammad Ali: Through the Eyes of the World." The $19.95 DVD "isn't a slick, overblown, expensive Hollywood production, but rather a thorough, objective documentary about a very complex person" (L.A. TIMES, 2/11).

ADAGE.com reports that a poll conducted of 974 agency executives and 185 advertisers in partnership with market research firms Research.Net and Advertising Database found that advertising budgets "are getting tighter, and measuring results is more important in this down economy." Fifty-five percent of agencies and marketers feel that budgets "will decrease in the next 12 months, and 50% said it will be two years before spending returns to 2000 levels" (ADAGE.com, 2/11).

DAILY VARIETY reports, "For the second consecutive year, Los Angeles' Staples Center has been named arena of the year at the Pollstar Concert Industry Awards" (DAILY VARIETY, 2/11).
