KEYNOTE SPEAKERS AT SPORT SUMMIT ADDRESS LEAGUE ISSUES

This morning at the 24th International Sport Summit at the Marriott Marquis in Manhattan, N.Y. Deputy Mayor for Economic Development & N.Y. 2012 Olympic Bid Founder Dan Doctoroff, AFL Commissioner David Baker, USOC Managing Dir of Brand Development Matt Biespiel, MLS Commissioner Don Garber and WNBA President Val Ackerman all delivered keynote presentations on the status of their respective properties. Highlights from each speech follow:

Doctoroff: "Based on conservative assumptions, a New York Olympic Games would generate $3.3[B] in revenues, with no public funding required. Of that, $2.1[B] would be needed for the operating costs of the Games. The remaining $1.2[B] would be invested in a permanent legacy of parks and recreational facilities." Doctoroff said the $1.2B "would be the largest single investment in recreational facilities in New York's history." Doctoroff: "Overall, the economic impact of hosting the games would be enormous - $11[B] and 135,000 jobs."

Baker said the AFL's "mission is to be a fan-friendly, year-round, interactive football experience for new generations worldwide. … We think it's a young sport. About 30% of our demographic is below the age of 24; about 84% is below the age of 40."

Biespiel, on competition from the X Games: "We don't view the X Games as a threat to our brand or to our business. In fact, I would argue that it brings more people into the fold, because the sports that you see in the X Games are all grounded in Olympic sport. In terms of did we shift [our marketing focus to a younger demo] because of the X Games, the answer is no. We felt that we had an opportunity with young people. They are clearly the future of our franchise, and importantly, it's a market that our sponsors are very interested in."

Garber said that with the formation of the new company that purchased World Cup U.S. TV rights, and with ESPN/ABC televising the World Cup as well as MLS, the league will "integrate the most valuable programming in soccer with our league, with features, vignettes, and other marketing programs. We'll be able to strategically schedule our games and cross-promote it with those higher-rated games … and take a very, very proactive approach in how we present this game on television."

Ackerman: "The challenge for women's sports as a whole is to establish sustainability and longevity, and then ultimately growth. … I think in the end, it may be a long process for women's sports … but the good news is that this foundation is set and the process is clearly moving forward" (THE DAILY).

SELIG CALLS DC “PRIME CANDIDATE” FOR RELOCATION

MLB Commissioner Bud Selig held a news conference this afternoon following the conclusion of the owners meetings in Phoenix, and addressed the possibility of a franchise landing in Washington, DC: "Do I think relocation is coming in the near future? And I don't exactly know what the near future means. I do. ... I'd have to say, given the demographics of the area, and the number of people who want it, they are the prime candidate for relocation. There's no question" (ESPNews, 1/17).

CART STILL LOOKING AT INDY AS POSSIBLE HOME BASE

With reports this week that CART may relocate to Indianapolis, CART VP/Communications Adam Saal said today there has been "no formal proposal to move CART" from Troy, MI, but the series' recent change in leadership "could accelerate plans to look at new sites."
