CONTRACTION AFFECTS FELT BY MINOR LEAGUE ORGANIZATIONS

The Moline DISPATCH reports that the fate of the class-A Midwest League Quad City River Bandits has "become even more muddled" as their current parent organization, the Twins, faces contraction. Team President Kevin Krause was unsure what would become of his organization, but said that "whatever happened won’t take place overnight." Krause: "This is not going to shake out in two or three minutes. My hope is that Major League Baseball has thought through all of the components and that they know all of the issues" (Moline DISPATCH, 11/7).

The DES MOINES REGISTER reports, "If Minnesota and Montreal fold, it would not necessarily mean any of the teams’ minor-league franchises would be required to fold," because those franchises "could try to affiliate with another major-league team" (DES MOINES REGISTER, 11/7).

ALL THOSE YEARS AGO…

The CHICAGO TRIBUNE reports that in ‘96, before Arizona had even begun playing in the league, Jerry Colangelo said of the five-year CBA negotiated with the players’ union in ‘95, "Do you want to walk off a cliff now or walk off a cliff five years from now? I’d rather build relationships now and prevent that from happening five years down the road." But five years later, the owners "voted to pay two teams to walk off that cliff" on Tuesday despite the fact that Colangelo’s D’Backs have "won a World Series faster than any other expansion team" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 11/7).

IOC WILL CALL FOR AFGHAN TRUCE DURING SALT LAKE GAMES

The AP reports the IOC "will call for a truce in the Afghan conflict during next February’s Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City." IOC President Jacques Rogge "reaffirmed that there was no question of the February 8-24 Games being called off," and an IOC spokesperson noted that the Olympic movement "had traditionally asked countries involved in wars to stop fighting when the Games were taking place" (AP, 11/7).

Wizards F Kwame Brown was announced today as the celebrity spokesperson for The National Kidney Foundation of the National Capital area. Additionally, Brown will be featured in PSA announcements for the Foundation (THE DAILY).

CNNSI.com reports on the demands that Kelci Stringer has in her $100M wrongful death lawsuit against the Vikings in the aftermath of the death of her husband, OL Korey Stringer, on August 1. Stringer "wants the individuals who supervised her husband – both on the football field and medically – to answer for their actions and decisions" (CNNSI.com, 11/7).

REUTERS reports FIFA President Sepp Blatter, responding to "thousands of letters from members of the public," issued an open letter to World Cup co-host South Korea "to stop animal cruelty," as dogs and cats in the country are "often tortured while being prepared for human consumption" (REUTERS, 11/7).

Comcast SportsNet announced today that the 10th annual Leukemia Sports-A-Thon raised a record $180,450 during Monday’s live telecast. An official game-worn autographed Michael Jordan Wizards jersey fetched the most dollars, garnering a $10,000 bid (THE DAILY).

The Portland (ME) PRESS-HERALD reports "one of the largest parcels of recreation land in Maine has gone on the market," with the 8,373-acre Saddleback ski area up for sale with a $12M price tag (Portland (ME) PRESS-HERALD, 11/7).
