ADIDAS REPORTEDLY LOOKING TO CONSOLIDATE AD AGENCY LINEUP

ADWEEK cites sources as saying that adidas "has approached global agency networks about its ad business, currently split among more than a dozen agencies in different parts of the world." Sources indicated that adidas is "seeking to achieve cohesion among ad messages in different regions, as well as efficiencies." The process "may lead to the elimination of some – but not all agencies." adidas’ agencies include Legas Delaney, S.F. and London; Burrell Communications, Chicago; and 180 in Amsterdam (ADWEEK, 11/1).


OLYMPIC DEALING: UNION PACIFIC; K-C’S KLEENEX SIGN ON

Union Pacific (UP) Railroad today was named the official railroad service supplier to the ’02 Winter Games and an official provider of the Salt Lake ’02 Olympic Torch Relay. UP had previously secured official railroad status for the ’02 and ’04 U.S. Olympic Teams. As part of today’s deal, UP will create a special train, including two locomotives and 18 cars, to transport the Olympic Flame and Torch Relay staff through 11 states and more than 3,200 miles (THE DAILY).

Kleenex brand tissues signed a deal becoming the official facial tissue supplier for the ‘02 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, as well as for the members of the ‘02 and ‘04 U.S. Olympic Teams (THE DAILY).


NASCAR RULES CHANGED TO TRY TO MAKE RACING MORE SAFE

THATSRACIN.com reports Winston Cup drivers, crew chiefs and car owners agreed this afternoon on "rule changes for races at Daytona and Talladega," to prevent "big packs of cars racing bumper-to-bumper and side-by-side" that have "created frightening racing conditions." Changes will be made to the aerodynamics of the race cars. NASCAR "has been under increasing pressure from the teams to find a way to make the racing safer at the two tracks" (THATSRACIN.com, 11/1).


UK WEBSITE SPORTAL SOLD TO ONLINE BOOKIE

The London GUARDIAN reports UK-based sports Internet company Sportal "has been sold to little known online bookie ukbetting for just" US$1.46. In addition, ukbetting paid Sportal US$248,460 in fees and for technology. Sportal "rose to prominence" during the dot.com boom and "spent tens of millions building up its brand," once employing "340 people over several continents" before the economic slowdown (London GUARDIAN, 11/1).


IN OTHER NEWS…

The AP reported that ABC News President David Westin "apologized to a group of students" at Columbia Univ. Graduate School of Journalism yesterday for telling them "he had no opinion" when asked " whether the Pentagon was a legitimate target" for terrorists. Westin originally told the students, "Our job is to determine what is, not what ought to be, and when we get into the job of what ought to be, I think we’re not doing a service to the American people" (AP, 10/31).

BUZZER BEATERS

N.Y.-based Venator Group will officially begin doing business as Foot Locker, Inc. tomorrow, following today’s shareholder meeting in N.Y. (THE DAILY).

Jason Kidd, Ray Allen, Michael Finley, Antonio Davis, Jermaine O'Neal, Shawn Marion and Reggie Miller "were included [today] among seven NBA players who will compete for the United States" at next summer’s World Basketball Championships in Indianapolis. The final five spots on the 12-man roster will be determined at a later date (AP, 11/1).

The Phillies have signed a seven-year contract with CA-based Paciolan for all ticketing technology, including providing the interface between the team's official Web site and MLB.com. Paciolan has similar deals with the Diamondbacks, Rockies and Padres (THE DAILY).

Kent Heitholt, sports editor of the Columbia (MO) Daily Tribune, "was found dead early" this morning after "apparently being beaten in the newspaper’s parking lot." Heitholt previously worked for The Times of Shreveport, LA (AP, 11/1).

Retail chain Books-A-Million today selected "How I Play Golf" by Tiger Woods as the company’s fourth quarter Buyer’s Pick. The Buyer’s Pick is chosen on a quarterly basis, and selected by the book buyers of American Wholesale Book Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Books-A-Million (THE DAILY).

The Northern Kentucky ABA 2000 team, which planned on calling itself the Colonels, "will be called the Cats." Cats Managing Partner George Spencer said, "We had planned on using the name Colonels, but Louisville now has the rights to the name should the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets make a move to Kentucky" (CINCINNATI POST, 10/31).

The BOSTON HERALD reports that Patriots QB Tom Brady "was asked about the much-talked-about ESPN parody" which ran Sunday claiming he was a lost member of the Brady Bunch. "I still haven't seen it," Brady said. "But a couple of guys on the team came and said, ‘Is that true? Were you really (the lost Brady)?’" (BOSTON HERALD, 11/1).

The NCAA Honors Committee announced this year’s six NCAA Silver Anniversary Award recipients. They are: Richard Chapman; Maurice “Bo” Ellis; Herman Frazier; Betsy King; John Naber; and Rodney Slater. The Silver Anniversary Award recognizes former student-athletes who have distinguished themselves since completing their college athletic careers 25 years ago (THE DAILY).

adidas formally announced today that it has entered into a partnership with championship female bobsled driver Jean Racine, who has medaled in 23 straight international competitions (THE DAILY).

A Houston TV station is reporting former Red Sox manager Jimy Williams will become the next manager of the Astros (AP, 11/1).
