WWF NAME BATTLE GOES TO CONSERVATIONISTS

The AP reports that "in the great WWF name battle, the panda body-slammed The Rock." Justice Robin Jacob ruled Friday that the World Wrestling Federation "breached a 1994 agreement" between the World Wrestling Federation and the World Wildlife Fund "that limited its use of the initials." The decision will restrict the wrestling group's ability to promote itself and will force it "to abandon" its Web address, wwf.com. World Wildlife Fund spokesman Anita Neville, on the decision: "Our name and reputation is upheld. …The initials are vital to our organization" (AP/BOSTON GLOBE, 8/10).


NEW WOMEN’S POLO LEAGUE TO DEBUT IN NOVEMBER

The U.S. Women’s Polo Federation (USWPF) announced today the formation of a 12-team professional women’s league to debut in November. The USWPF will place teams in Atlanta, Charlottesville, Chicago, Dallas, L.A., Lexington, Long Island, Palm Beach, San Diego, Scottsdale, Seattle and Washington DC. The USWPF plans to market the league with the tagline: "A Princess at Every Event…A Warrior on the Field" (THE DAILY).


MSG RENEWS MAAC TV BROADCAST RIGHTS

MSG Networks and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) have agreed to a three-year broadcast rights renewal, with MSG televising 22 league contests, including men’s and women’s basketball and men’s ice hockey. MSG will air the Pepsi MAAC Basketball Game of the Week through the ’03-04 season, as well as six men’s games and three women’s games during the MAAC Basketball Tournaments. The network will also televise the MAAC Hockey Championship games through ‘04 (THE DAILY).


QUAKER OATS TO CUT HEADQUARTERS JOBS

REUTERS reports that with the purchase by PepsiCo Inc., Quaker Oats "plans to eliminate about 60 headquarters jobs." The cuts "range from positions in investors relations to finance and accounting" (REUTERS/JUST-DRINKS.com, 8/10). At presstime, PepsiCo shares were trading at $45.79, up $0.46 (THE DAILY).


MORE DETAILS ANNOUNCED ON FOX’S SPEEDVISION & OLN DEALS

TVinsite.com reports that "almost three months after the deal was announced, Cox Communications Inc. and Comcast Corp. revealed further details" of their sales of Speedvision and Outdoor Life Network to Fox Cable Networks Group. In an SEC filing, Cox "said it received $439.7 million in cash for its 30 percent stake in Speedvision/OLN." Also in an SEC filing, Comcast loaned "$400 million as part of its acquisition of the remaining interest of OLN" to Fox Entertainment Group (TVinsite, 8/10).

Reds Owner Carl Lindner is scheduled to leave the hospital this weekend after treatment for colitis (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 8/10)….Saturday’s Comets-Sparks game is sold out, with $110 courtside tickets "being sold for as much as $165" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 8/10)….With their move from the IHL to the AHL, Barons tickets will be slightly higher this year. After ranging from $8-23 in ’00-01, tickets will be from $9-25 this year (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 8/10)….Boxer Oscar De La Hoya’s handlers have withdrawn a multimillion-dollar offer to fight Fernando Vargas because "Vargas made too many demands as the fighters closed in on a deal." The NCAA will appoint a task force to focus on issues of "academic and fiscal integrity" in college athletics (AP/WASHINGTON POST, 8/10)….The World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame is honoring the Nuggets and the Avalanche as the recipients of the 2001 Pro Team Community Award (THE DAILY)….The U.S. Figure Skating Association will visit Portland on Tuesday to review the city’s proposal to host the ’05 National Championships (THE DAILY)….The ’02 U.S. Senior Open Championships announced that former President Bush will serve as Honorary Chair for the 23rd U.S. Senior Open (THE DAILY)….The official theme song of the ’08 Beijing Olympic Games will be "So Much Love, So Far Away," a song produced by Emilio Estefan and co-produced by Jon Secada and Sebastian Krys (SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST, 8/9)….Turkey wants to build a F-1 circuit in Istanbul within three years (BBC, 8/9).
