ESPN adds Canon volumetric video highlights of women's NCAA Final Four to Meta's Xtadium

ESPN has added volumetric video highlights of women’s NCAA Final Four games to its branded area within Meta’s Xtadium virtual reality app as part of a collaboration with Canon.

In January, Canon debuted its C-View volumetric video solution for an alternate game stream in partnership with the Cavaliers and Bally Sports Ohio. The 100-camera system that underpinned that stream, installed in Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse (which hosted the women’s Final Four), was used to produce the volumetric highlights, while other regular VR highlights viewable in the app were produced by Cosm. C-View translates the footage captured by the camera system into a digital twin of the playing surface/on-court action. Fans can then view an immersive video feed that incorporates sweeping views from previously unavailable angles, like over player’s shoulders or at sneaker level on the court.
