Yankees voice John Sterling immediately retiring

Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling "is retiring effective immediately after more than three decades in the booth." The news comes after the team had planned a "news conference for this weekend in which the 85-year-old Sterling was anticipated to retire, citing health concerns." WFAN will replace Sterling with Justin Shackil and Emmanuel Berbari, who were "already slated to call the majority of the road games this season with Suzyn Waldman" (THE ATHLETIC, 4/15). Sterling called 5,420 regular-season and another 211 postseason Yankees games. He will be "recognized in a pregame ceremony on Saturday" prior to the Rays-Yankees game at Yankee Stadium (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 4/15).
