Istanbul has been selected to host the 2027 European Games, "giving the Turkish capital a chance to show it can stage an international multi-sports event as it eyes the 2036 Olympics." The European Olympic Committees group said today that its exec committee "unanimously picked" Istanbul as the host, although the decision "still needs to be approved by national members" at a meeting in June (AP, 3/27).

Spanish prosecutors are seeking "two-and-a-half years jail for disgraced ex-football chief Luis Rubiales," who is facing a trial for kissing Spain MF Jenni Hermoso on the lips "against her will." Prosecutors also want Rubiales, who has been "charged with sexual assault and coercion," to pay at least $54,000 "in compensation to Hermoso" (LE MONDE, 3/26).

The Australian Football League has "denied it has a cocaine problem," after whistleblowers "claimed abuse of the drugs is widespread in the sport" (BBC.com, 3/27).

Ulster Rugby names former South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust CEO Hugh McCaughey interim CEO. This move follows Jonny Petrie leaving the club on Monday "by mutual consent." McCaughey coached Ulster and Ireland players at youth level and managed Ulster Rugby and the Irish Sevens team at the 2009 World Cup (BBC.com, 3/27).
