ICYMI: Baker, U.S. Open Cup, Fenway Sports Group

There was plenty of big news heading into the weekend, as NCAA President Charlie Baker spoke about the SEC-Big Ten partnership, the U.S. Open Cup locked in eight MLS teams for 2024 and Fenway Sports Group promoted Sam Kennedy to CEO.

  • Baker noted he isn’t panicking about the SEC and Big Ten's partnership, and if anything, he’s optimistic the discussions can help bring resolutions to some of college sports’ biggest lingering issues.
  • U.S. Soccer announced that the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will include only eight top-level MLS teams after MLS initially announced its intent to end the participation of its first teams in the event altogether. Another nine MLS development teams from MLS Next Pro will participate in this year’s tournament, along with Next Pro’s two new independent teams.
  • Kennedy, the Red Sox President & CEO, was named the new CEO of FSG at the organization's annual in-person partners meeting this afternoon in Bonita Springs, Fla. Also receiving a title bump was Billy Hogan, the Liverpool CEO who is now the FSG International CEO.
