Sports Business Awards: Tech — Technology Collaboration of the Year

Cleveland Browns

Cleveland Browns x Wicket x Lava x Tapin2 x Aramark

Three technologies, one vendor and one team walk into a bar — and enable fans to buy a beer with their face. Express Beer at Cleveland Browns Stadium uses Wicket facial recognition, Lava digital currency management and Tapin2 point-of-sale products to provide age-authenticated alcohol sales tied to a credit card for a seamless process.

MLS

MLS x Apple

In the first season of a 10-year agreement, the Apple-broadcast MLS Season Pass provided global coverage with a sharp picture, rich graphics and plentiful shoulder content. Apple also embedded the soccer league across its product ecosystem, with integrations in Apple Music, Podcasts, News, Fitness, Retail and original TV+ programming, such as the “Messi Meets America” documentary.

Amazon

NFL x Amazon Prime Video and AWS

In the second season of Prime Video’s exclusive “Thursday Night Football” coverage, Prime Vision with Next Gen Stats greatly expanded upon an insightful alternative feed. AWS machine learning models introduced Defensive Alerts to predict which players are likely to blitz and refined data-driven storytelling around open receivers, fourth-down decisions, field-goal probabilities and more.

NFL

NFL x ESPN x Beyond Sports

“Toy Story Funday Football” was built upon the “Big City Greens Classic” blueprint with a more complicated technical undertaking from ESPN and Beyond Sports by using NFL Next Gen Stats sensors and optical tracking for more detailed 3D characters and actions. After a few early glitches, the presentation was fun and captivating for a young crowd, setting a record for live event viewing on Disney+.

NHL

NHL x ESPN x Beyond Sports

The “Big City Greens Classic,” thanks to Beyond Sports and ESPN Creative Studio, rendered NHL Edge puck and player tracking data into the animated environment of the Disney show. The pioneering broadcast attracted a dramatically younger and more female viewing audience that also set an ESPN alternative broadcast record.

Track160

Pixellot x Track160

These two artificial intelligence technologies share hardware (a single set of cameras) and a co-founder (Miky Tamir) but otherwise provide distinct, complementary products. Pixellot leads in automated video production; Track160 provides FIFA-certified tracking data and analytics at a more accessible price point. Together, they provide coaches and players a comprehensive offering with no additional installation.
