New PGA Tour Vision app launching alongside Apple Vision Pro

Golf fans will have a new, high-tech way to consume the PGA Tour when it makes its way to Pebble Beach early next month, as the tour has teamed with Apple to launch PGA Tour Vision.

PGA Tour Vision coincides with the launch of Apple Vision Pro, the spatial computing headset that is available for purchase starting Friday, Feb. 2.

At Pebble Beach, fans watching from home who have purchased the headset, which retails starting at $3,499, can view play at the famous par-3 7th hole during the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

PGA Tour Vision users will be able to see tournament data from ShotLink through videos and graphics, live shot trails and more. Spatial 2D windows will include leaderboards, course information and video highlights as well, the tour said.

Users can see shots anywhere on the hole, from an overhead view all the way down to being greenside. Rather than using a controller like on a Meta Quest headset, users can navigate through PGA Tour Vision using their eyes, hands or through physical motion.

After debuting at Pebble Beach with one hole, the tour will incrementally increase Tour Vision availability with the aim of having it at all 18 holes for the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in mid-March. The goal is to have it available on 18 holes for each Signature event in 2024.

PGA Tour SVP/Digital Operations Scott Gutterman said the tour reached out to Apple about the platform when Apple Vision Pro was first announced last year. The tour worked with Quintar, its official mobile AR and XR developer, on the app alongside Work&Co for the design.

“We’ve really created something that’s very unique,” Gutterman said. “We’re one of the first sports to be on the platform and certainly the first in golf. We’re not only bringing you into the event but actually letting you immerse yourself in it.”

Gutterman’s team on the app was led by Senior Product Manager Matt Mullen and VP/Product Management Eric Hanson.

“To us it’s really just an evolution of our digital product,” Hanson said.

In addition to tour-produced content, CBS Sports will have live streaming coverage available within the app. The tour said it will test out the live stream at Pebble Beach with the expectation of it being fully implemented at the Genesis Invitational in L.A. from Feb. 15-18.
