Playfly, Vision Insights team up for new Fan Score metric, with first report focused on MLB

Playfly Sports today introduced “Playfly Fan Score powered by Vision Insights,” a series of reports, data indices and fan engagement insights diving deep into sports fandom, fan behaviors, rankings and topical narratives. Armed with league-specific fan scores that will be updated annually, Playfly’s teams will be providing properties and brands levels of data-based evaluation with sharper focus to ultimately drive more meaningful fan engagement. The Playfly Fan Score is based on proprietary algorithms grounded in elements of fandom that can help predict future sentiment and engagement. The specific scoring system has 12 fan-based factors that Playfly has historically been providing as part of broader, impactful analyses for teams, leagues and brands. “Understanding the fan at every level and then activating on that data is what will be driving the sports industry in the years to come,” said Playfly CEO Michael Schreiber.

MLB'S LOCAL STRENGTH: The first Playfly Fan Score report focuses on MLB and details surprising new insights covering all aspects of MLB fandom, such as:

  • MLB viewing is strongest at the local level, with local broadcasts making up 82% of all regular-season viewing.
  • MLB has a rather unique fan journey, with a higher concentration of MLB fans becoming a fan between 0-17 years old (70%) than the NFL (66%), NBA (60%), and NHL (48%).
  • Local MLB viewers are 27% more likely than casual MLB fans to take action after seeing a brand's sponsorship with league, team or individual.
  • The official Fan Score also ranks each MLB team according to calculated Fan Receptivity, Passion and Marketplace values. In its first installment, the Playfly Fan Score revealed that the Braves lead in Fan Passion, the Marlins topped the chart for Fan Receptivity, and the Yankees dominated in Fan Marketplace.
