College Notes

In Lubbock, Nathan Geise reported the Texas Tech football team’s season tickets for the 2024 home schedule inside Jones AT&T Stadium have sold out. This is the “second year in a row the football program has sold out of its season-ticket allotment,” which this year is 32,000 season passes. This figure “does not include tickets put aside for Texas Tech students, normally in the range of 12,500 to 13,000 seats.” Giese noted a waitlist for season tickets for the 2025 season “will be launched in the coming weeks.” This will also be the debut for the revamped south end zone and Dustin R. Womble Football Center, which is “expected to be completed ahead of the 2024 campaign.” Last year's season-ticket allotment with the south end zone stands not being opened was 31,649, which “ended a six-year streak below 30,000” (LUBBOCK AVALANCHE-JOURNAL, 5/1).

SAVE MONEY, BE HAPPY: In Providence, John Rooke writes with a school’s athletic department in financial distress like UConn, the way to keep coaches (and players) happy is by “having continuity,” and “keeping contractual obligations doesn’t hurt, either.” With the bonuses earned by men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley and his staff for all that winning, AD David Benedict had the “presence of mind to take out an insurance policy in order to pay for those contracted bonuses" before last season started. Benedict saved his strapped department nearly $3M with “that kind of foresight” (PROVIDENCE JOURNAL, 5/3).
