Van Pelt navigating media landscape

The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand and I launched our sports media podcast last week with a Scott Van Pelt interview.

During the interview, I asked ESPN’s Van Pelt if he ever felt pressure to move to a streaming service. His answer speaks to a lot about where sports media stands these days.

“When I was out at College Park on Friday night, people will say to me, ‘Hey, I love you on ‘Pardon My Take.’ And I always say, ‘Well, thank you.’ And I’m thinking, ‘I’ve been on that a handful of times. We have a nightly show. It’s fun. You could check it out if you want.’ But I’m realistic about where the appeal lies for different demos.

“But I don’t worry about anything as it relates to where I’ll be next, because I presume that what I do will translate, whether it’s in a traditional lane, i.e., a host of some content, some sports-related show, or if I reach a point where I do some weekly podcast. I don’t know.

“I have the benefit in that crowded space of having created an identity where I think people don’t have to learn who I am. They might not be interested, but at least I’m not having to introduce myself.”

Be sure to give a listen to new editions of The Marchand and Ourand Sports Media Podcast each Wednesday.
