There were countless reasons to doubt the IOC could pull off the delicate political dance required to give both Paris and L.A. an Olympics at the same time, but Bach did it. The deal solved a lot of Olympic problems and consolidated his power in one moment. And after stumbling badly on the Russian doping issue in 2016, Bach led a stronger, if belated, response in 2017, banning the Russian team from Pyeongchang.
