10 decision-makers on local streaming

Bob Bowman
President and chief executive officer, MLBAM
An early advocate for in-market streaming, Bowman has readjusted his timetables, as the product has been much slower to grow. But few, if any, carry his influence within digital sports media.
Eric Grilly
Executive vice president and chief digital officer, Comcast Sports Group

It’s all about mobile for Grilly, following two streaming tests Comcast conducted last year that showed scant consumer demand for watching live local games on broadband.

Tracy Dolgin
President and chief executive officer, YES Network

The first RSN executive to embrace local streaming, Dolgin wants to control how his product is made available online as the industry approaches digital convergence.

Tom Garfinkel
President and chief operating officer, San Diego Padres

The Padres have embraced local streaming efforts in San Diego, even if consumers haven’t embraced the broadband service yet. Results are underwhelming, but the Padres continue to roll it out.

John Collins
Chief operating
officer, NHL

Collins knows that freeing up mobile rights is the key to getting the NHL’s local streaming efforts off the ground. He still needs to figure out the best way to make those rights available to RSNs.

Bill Koenig
Executive vice president of business and general counsel, NBA

For the past two years, Koenig has been looking to unlock local streaming rights for broadband. He’s now focused on mobile, as well, and is trying to figure out the price that will cause RSNs to act while maintaining a revenue stream for the league.
John Angelos
President and chief operating officer, MASN

Angelos is a skeptic of the terms and economics of MLB in-market streaming as currently organized, along with his father, Peter, Baltimore Orioles owner. The Angelos family leads an RSN that serves several of the country’s richest and most Web-savvy media markets.
Clark Pierce
Senior vice president of emerging technology, Fox Sports Net

More interested in streaming games to mobile rather than broadband, Pierce is waiting for a revenue stream to develop before rolling streaming services out to FSN’s stable of 19 RSNs.

Sarah Mensah
Senior vice president and chief operating officer, Portland Trail Blazers

Under Mensah’s direction, the Blazers have done more with local streaming — including launching an online digital network last week — than any other NBA team.

Sean McGrail
President, NESN

Among the opponents of in-market MLB streaming to date, McGrail heads the New England Sports Ventures-owned RSN that carries major influence with both sports television and baseball.
