Garber said that when the time is right they will figure out a proper transition and successionGETTY IMAGES

MLS Commissioner Don Garber last week signed a contract extension through '23, and he told SI's Grant Wahl having a succession plan is an "important part of any effective corporate governance." He said he has "a lot of key folks that work closely" with him, including MLS Business Ventures President & Managing Dir Gary Stevenson, President & Deputy Commissioner Mark Abbott and Exec VP/Competition & Player Relations Todd Durbin. Garber: "We continue to think about how do we all grow together. … At the right time we’ll be able to effectively figure out a proper transition and succession" (SI.com, 2/21).

SLOW THINGS DOWN? In Atlanta, Steve Hummer writes NASCAR should be asking itself "how much racing is too much racing," as it has been "faced with the diminishing returns of falling television ratings and a lessening profile on the sporting calendar." The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series "runs close to a month longer" than either the NHL or NBA at 273 days. It has been "debated whether a shorter, less diluted, season might increase interest." The whole "less-is-more argument plays to attentive ears in racing" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 2/22).

EVERYTHING IS FINE: XFL Dallas coach & GM Bob Stoops said that he has "no concern over the financial viability" of the XFL amid the recent news of the AAF's financial issues." He said, “I’m going to go do my job. Someone else is going to worry about the finances. ... All I can do is hopefully put a really exciting, fun product down for people to watch in the Dallas area" (OKLAHOMAN.com, 2/22).
