WEEI, WBZ Both Claim Top Boston Morning Show Rating

Two Boston radio shows both "tweeted out graphics claiming to be No. 1" in the market for morning shows among males 25-54 during the winter ratings period, and both "made seemingly logical cases," according to Chad Finn of the BOSTON GLOBE. WEEI-FM's "Kirk and Callahan" in its claim included the share it gets in the Boston market for listeners "who tune into Providence-based WVEI because the signal comes in better in certain areas." Meanwhile, WBZ-FM's "Toucher & Rich" in its claim "does not include these numbers." Without the WVEI stream included for WEEI, WBZ' "Toucher & Rich" was first, while "Kirk & Callahan" was second in morning drive time. When WVEI stream numbers are included, it "flips." For total-day audience during the winter period among men 25-54, WBZ was first and WEEI second. In the evenings (6:00-11:00pm ET), WBZ, which "features Bruins and Celtics game broadcasts," was first. WEEI, which "features Red Sox games," was No. 4. In afternoon drive time (2:00-6:00pm), WBZ' "Felger & Mazz" show was No. 1, while WEEI’s "Dale & Keefe" was No. 2. Regardless of how the numbers are measured, both stations "should brag." They combined to earn more than 20% of the Boston listening audience over the winter, an "achievement that has become so common that it’s easy to forget how remarkable it is" (BOSTONGLOBE.com, 4/19).
