Masters adding new AI-generated features from IBM

IBM, through its watsonx AI and data platform, will debut its new “Hole Insights” feature that will include detailed data on every hole at Augusta NationalIBM

The Masters will tee off next week with a pair of new AI-generated features from its global partner IBM as the tournament continues enhancing the digital experience for patrons.

IBM, through its watsonx AI and data platform, is debuting a new “Hole Insights” feature within the Masters app and on Masters.com that will include detailed data on every hole at Augusta National. Viewers can access the feature within the shot-tracking experience online and within the app, with IBM providing data on how each hole is playing that day, as well as over eight years of data that IBM has. The company, which has been a global partner of the Masters for more than 25 years, has more than 170,000 shots in its database.

“It’s going to give patrons around the world data points and context around the holes that have never been available before,” said IBM VP/Sports & Entertainment Partnerships Noah Syken. “The intersection of video around data around this course is special.”

The Masters and IBM last year debuted English-language AI narration on both platforms, and next week will debut Spanish-language narration as they look to grow their global audience. The narration includes both audio and closed captioning over video highlights for each player throughout their rounds.

“Everybody was pleased with it, but as with everything we try to advance the capabilities,” Syken said of the decision to add Spanish for this year. “The Masters is about the experience, on site and on the site.”
