Leicester City caution legal action over Premier League charges

English Football League club Leicester City is “considering legal action” after being charged by the Premier League with two breaches of financial rules that “could land them with a points deduction next season if they return to the top flight,” according to Martyn Ziegler of the London TIMES. Ziegler noted the Premier League says that clubs “must still submit accounts for the previous three seasons even if they are relegated.” Leicester City, who went down to the EFL last season, has been “charged with being in breach of the maximum” $132M spending losses and for "failing to submit audited accounts." If proved, that could mean a “sanction similar to Everton’s six-point deduction.” The case is the “fourth in the past year” of a club being charged by the Premier League with breaching its Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), with two charges against Everton and one against Nottingham Forest, who was docked four points earlier this week. The Leicester City case is the “most complex so far, however, and is likely to drag on well into next season.” Leicester City is in the second automatic promotion spot with nine matches left (London TIMES, 3/21).
