The Market

A measured look at this week’s holdings

Watch party

College football’s 150th season got off to a strong ratings start. Auburn’s win over Oregon drew a 52% increase in viewers on ABC vs. the same window last year, ESPN’s Week 1 prime-time game between Georgia and Vanderbilt had its most viewers in three years, and Fox’s noon kickoff was up 91% this year for Ohio State vs. Florida Atlantic.

Bad boys

While good sportsmanship shined in the U.S. Open women’s draw, the men’s side was overshadowed by the negative antics of Daniil Medvedev (taunting the crowd, rude behavior toward ball boys), Nick Kyrgios (code violation, called the ATP “corrupt”) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (badmouthing the chair umpire).

Your move, guys

The NHL elected not to opt out of its current collective-bargaining agreement by the Sept. 1 deadline, raising hopes that the league will avoid a work stoppage. The NHLPA has until Sept. 15 to decide whether it will do the same, which would cause the agreement to expire next year rather than in 2022.
