MASL San Diego Sockers Hope To Build Indoor Arena In Oceanside
Major Arena Soccer League club San Diego Sockers "hope to build an indoor, multi-use sports arena" in Oceanside, Calif., according to Bryce Miller of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Plans for the arena have "reached the staff-review stage with the city." If approved, it would "create a 5,000- to 8,000-seat building in El Corazon SoCal Sports Complex." The Sockers "would cut long-standing ties" with the San Diego Sports Arena, now operating as Pechanga Arena. Sockers GM Sean Bowers said that along with a soccer team, the facility "could host events ranging from concerts to CIF high school contests and championships." Bowers also said that he was "uncertain" if any other current tenants of Pechanga Arena "could or would join" the club in Oceanside. Pechanga Arena GM Ernie Hahn was "surprised" by the confirmation of the plan. He said that he has "not spoken with the Sockers about an arena initiative." Miller noted the cost of the project has "not been released." Oceanside Mayor Peter Weiss said that he was "not aware of financial projections" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 1/1).
