The Univ. of Colorado, in a "nod toward the environment," will begin "offering 'lightweight aluminum' cups to fans" this football season at Folsom Field, according to Matt Schubert of the DENVER POST. CU will be the first school in the nation to "offer such cups to fans at a collegiate venue." The cups were "designed in partnership with Ball Corporation," and will be available for the first time at Saturday's home opener against Nebraska. CU spokesperson Ryan Huff said that for the '19 season, beer will be "sold exclusively in the aluminum cups," with soda and wine "still coming in plastic cups." The university's goal is to be "entirely plastic-free in its sports venues" by '20. Huff said that the aluminum cups also will be "made available at volleyball and basketball games inside the CU Events Center" (DENVER POST, 9/4). NBCSPORTS.com's Zach Barnett noted CU "became the first college sports program in America to implement a 'zero waste program' at all sports venues," doing so back in '08, and in '16 was the "only college athletics department to join the United Nation Sports for Climate Action Framework" (NBCSPORTS.com, 9/3).
