MLS expansion club Austin FC "cleared another major hurdle on its road to playing" in '21, as the site plan for the team's stadium in North Austin has been "approved by the city," according to Daniel Salazar of the AUSTIN BUSINESS JOURNAL. Austin Development Services Department Public Information & Marketing Program Manager Sylvia Arzola said that the site plan was "approved Aug. 12." She added that stadium construction "cannot begin until building plans are also approved," and that timeline "can vary on a case-by-case basis." Austin FC officials have previously said that they "want to break ground" this September on the $242M stadium development at McKalla Place (BIZJOURNALS.com, 8/19). Fair Play Austin, the political action committee backed by Circuit of the Americas Chair Bobby Epstein, said that it "will not campaign" for the MLS stadium voter proposition it "helped put on the ballot." In Austin, Philip Jankowski notes the announcement is a "major blow to supporters of Proposition A, which calls for elections on any lease of city-owned property for a sports or entertainment venue" (AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN, 8/20).
