Audience Analysis: NBCSN Gets Big EPL Opener; Northern Trust Down

NBCSN on Sunday drew a total audience delivery (TAD) of 1.01 million viewers for Chelsea-Manchester United, marking the best opening weekend EPL match on record in the U.S. The match drew 952,000 viewers on NBCSN alone. The TAD figure was 30% higher than Manchester City-Arsenal in the same 11:00am ET time slot last year. Viewership for Chelsea-ManU peaked from 12:45-1:00pm when USMNT star Christian Pulisic entered the game for Chelsea.

TRUST ISSUES: The final round of The Northern Trust on CBS drew 2.54 million viewers on Sunday afternoon as Patrick Reed won the first event of the FedExCup Playoffs. That figure is down from 2.75 million last year, when Bryson DeChambeau won the PGA Tour event in late August. This year also is down from 3.14 million two years ago.

KNOCK, KNOCK: The first episode of this season’s “Hard Knocks” with the Raiders at 10:00pm ET last Tuesday drew 705,000 viewers on TV. That's the best first episode for the HBO show since the Texans’ debut episode in '15. Another 174,000 viewers streamed the episode for a TAD of 879,000 viewers. HBO did not offer that 10:00pm stream until last year, when the Browns' debut had a TAD of 781,000 viewers (667,000 on TV alone).

NOTES: NBC on Sunday night drew 2.78 million viewers for the women’s portion of the U.S. Gymnastics Championship, where Simone Biles captured the title. That figure is down from 3.07 million for Biles’ win last year, and down from 2.88 million viewers two years ago....NBCSN on Sunday afternoon drew a TAD of 2.92 million viewers for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race from Michigan (2.9 million on TV, 22,800 on streaming). That is up 14% from 2.57 million last year for the August race, but down from 3.16 million two seasons ago. The race from Michigan also was the best Cup Series audience on cable TV in nearly two years....ArenaBowl XXXII on Sunday night drew 243,000 viewers on ESPN2, as the Albany Empire defeated the Philadelphia Soul. There is no figure for last year’s ArenaBowl, which was on CBSSN.
