MLS Avg. Attendance Lower; FC Cincy Third In Inaugural Season

MLS clubs at the start of August are averaging 21,007 fans per game, down 4% from last year's mark of 21,873 at the same point. Atlanta United leads the league again at 53,269 per game. The third-year club is coming off multiple league attendance records in ’18 and also set an MLS regular-season record with 72,548 at Saturday’s match against the Galaxy. Atlanta United is one of five teams drawing home crowds at or above 100% capacity for the season, along with the Timbers, Earthquakes, Sounders and Sporting K.C. Meanwhile, the Crew, whose existence in Ohio was salvaged before the season, are leading all clubs in gate increase to date (+22%). A full season at Audi Field has helped DC United's numbers, while increased capacity at Providence Park has boosted the Timbers' average. Conversely, the Fire, who recently decided to exit Bridgeview, Ill., and SeatGeek Stadium for a return to Chicago, rank last in the league in attendance at 11,770 per game. Minnesota United is averaging 19,748 fans at the newly opened Allianz Field this season. But that figure is down 12% from the club's first two years at the Univ. of Minnesota's larger TCF Bank Stadium. In FC Cincinnati's first season in MLS, the club ranks third in average attendance to date.
