MLB Franchise Notes: Mets' Van Wagenen Continues To Take Heat
On Long Island, Mark Herrmann wrote Mets Exec VP & GM Brodie Van Wagenen is "learning the hard way that his new job is not as easy as it looked when he was an agent, trying to outsmart general managers." What Van Wagenen "needs to learn next is how to graciously accept blame." This season is a "mess, and it’s his mess" (NEWSDAY, 7/7). In N.Y., Dennis Young wrote Van Wagenen "deserves most of the blame" for the current roster construction. But with the Wilpon family "refusing to let Van Wagenen fire" manager Mickey Callaway, it is Callaway who "suffers, and Van Wagenen who looks indecisive, and that’s not fair to either man" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 7/7).
READY TO POUNCE: In Detroit, Anthony Fenech noted news of the Tigers extending the contract of Exec VP/Baseball Operations & GM Al Avila "didn’t sit well with the fanbase, which has been upset for some time." However, those fans are "ignoring the fundamental reality that the Tigers’ rebuilding process is right on schedule." Keeping that schedule "made Avila’s contract extension a relative no-brainer: At the stage the Tigers are at -- not quite two full seasons into the process -- it would have been malpractice" for team Chair & CEO Chris Ilitch to "go in a different way" (FREEP.com, 7/7).
THROW IT BACK: The Reds during their game against the Indians yesterday were "wearing the uniforms the team had used for one year only in 1956 -- a look that featured a sleeveless, button-up shirt with the player's number on one side of the front and the club's 'Mr. Redlegs' mascot on the other" (ESPN.com, 7/7).
