Gritty Wins Best In Sports Social Media

Gritty used his time accepting the award to give his take on the recent "Game of Thrones" series finale

Gritty has had quite a year. Revealed at the start of the current NHL season as the mascot of the Flyers, his arrival was initially viewed with great skepticism by an often-critical Philadelphia fanbase. But his quirky and unpredictable personality has transformed him into a beloved personality. Now it’s led to his selection as the winner of the Sports Social Media category at the Sports Business Awards. Boosted by the ability of the Flyers’ social media team, which inserted him into popular memes such as a spoof of Kim Kardashian’s Twitter-famous Paper magazine cover, Gritty has become one of the most talked about sensations in sports. He’s also been a darling of late-night television, appearing on both "The Late Show" with Stephen Colbert and on Conan O’Brien’s show. Accepting the award, Gritty -- who sported a tuxedo instead of his normal Flyers jersey -- slowly made his way through the crowd in a way only he could, tussling the hair of attendees and attempting to climb over others. A mascot of no words and no peers, Gritty raised the trophy, provided his signature squeak sound and quickly exited back into the crowd, likely onto his next viral moment.
