A year that saw ESPN+ launch and gain more than 2 million subscribers was enough to earn a Sports Business Award for the ESPN-owned streaming service. ESPN+ struck a slew of deals for live sports rights on top of content deals for shows around Peyton Manning and Kobe Bryant. ESPN started debuting its “30 for 30” documentaries on the streaming service even before they appeared on linear television. “We’ve been up-and-running since April 2018, and the first year has been fantastic,” said ESPN+ Exec VP & GM Russell Wolff. “We have three highlights over the past year. The first is our launch in April. The second is launching UFC on January 19, 2019, and the third highlight is reaching 2 million subscribers. For me personally, the highlight was the day they announced that I was going to get to lead this business in October.”
