Bruins Win Boston's Busy Wednesday Night Ratings Battle
Boston sports fans had a number of games to choose from Wednesday night in primetime, with Red Sox-Yankees, Game 2 of the Pacers-Celtics series and Game 4 of Bruins-Maple Leafs, and "based on preliminary ratings," the Bruins "won the night, but not by an enormous margin over the Celtics," according to Chad Finn of the BOSTON GLOBE. The Bruins' 6-4 win over the Maple Leafs "delivered a combined 7.9 in the Boston market -- a 4.1 on NBCSN and a 3.8 on NESN." However, the ratings "could have been even higher," as NESN claimed its ratings were "affected by an error in the cable listings on multiple providers." NESN said that in the previous seven Bruins first-round playoff games that "also aired nationally," it averaged 85-90% of the audience. The net got 49% on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Celtics, who also won their playoff game, "delivered a combined 5.7 -- a 3.3 on NBC Sports Boston and a 2.4 on TNT." The Red Sox game also "did decent numbers," as the team's 5-3 loss to the Yankees drew a "combined 4.4 -- a 2.2 on both NESN Plus and ESPN" (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/19).
END OF A BLUE PERIOD: In St. Louis, Dan Caesar notes the Blues "finally are landing on one of the two NBCUniversal networks that regularly show NHL games," after the first five games of the series against the Jets were "spread across overflow outlets NHL Network, CNBC and USA." Game 6 of the series now "makes its way to NBCSN on Saturday night." However, it is "by default," as there are "no leftover contests for the secondary choices" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 4/19).
BACK AFTER THIS: The GLOBE & MAIL's Susan Robertson notes the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has "decided not to punish" Quebecor for "pulling its TVA Sports signal from Bell TV screens last week" as the Stanley Cup Playoffs began. Instead, Canada's broadcast regulator Thursday "issued a mandatory order requiring the company to maintain its TVA Sports signal for Bell subscribers as a dispute continues between the two companies over the terms of carrying the channel" (GLOBE & MAIL, 4/19).
