FS Detroit's "Players Only" Broadcast Concept Gets Mixed Reaction

FS Detroit yesterday for Indians-Tigers debuted its first of 17 "Players Only" broadcasts, but Triple-A PCL Iowa Cubs radio play-by-play announcer Alex Cohen on Twitter called the move "disheartening to see." Cohen tweeted, "The 'players only' component ... I get it. Kirk Gibson is a legend, Craig Monroe is a good guy. No one is saying they shouldn't be a growing part of the broadcast." He suggested having the former players "be part of enhancing the broadcast" instead of "taking opportunities away" from other broadcasters like first-year FS Detroit play-by-play man Matt Shepard. Cohen: "Want to even expand on that? Pair Monroe and Gibson with a Tigers MiLB broadcaster" (TWITTER.com, 4/8). AWFUL ANNOUNCING's Andrew Bucholtz wrote it is "possible to find critics of everything that airs on TV, so a few Twitter criticisms alone won’t necessarily make the network change course." For FS Detroit, having a "'core lineup' of people who were already on these broadcasts anyway provides at least a little continuity to the traditional broadcast." However, abandoning traditional play-by-play for conversation "carries a lot of potential for blowback" (AWFULANNOUNCING.com, 4/9).
