NYRR organizes 50+ races annually throughout New York City and 100 total events, including:  the famed TCS New York City Marathon, the NYRR Five-Borough Series  and NYRR’s three Heritage events.

About the Business Development and Strategic Partnerships (BD&SP) Department

Our Business Development and Strategic Partnerships department is responsible for generating and garnering corporate revenue, budget-relieving value-in-kind and promotion for NYRR in exchange for benefits to partners. The department seeks to match the needs of NYRR with a like-minded partner’s objectives. NYRR’s needs include cash and budget-relieving products and services which in turn reduce NYRR’s expenses. The BD&SP department ensures that NYRR delivers on what is promised to our partners while continuing to focus on the mission driven objectives of NYRR.

This position requires leadership internally with direct reports and colleagues, and proven management experience including the development of employees.   This position also requires the ability to work simultaneously with multiple clients who have varying objectives and ever-changing priorities.

This is a highly visible, collaborative position within the organization which requires multi-tasking, juggling of priorities, leadership, patience, professionalism and team work, especially with core senior organization leaders. Key responsibilities are built upon the intersection of client strategy, NYRR brand strategy and top notch client service in a high paced, ever changing environment.  

About the Position

Position resides in the Business Development and Strategic Partnership Department and is the lead for all new business efforts for the organization.  This position is responsible for the day to day management of the sales team. The position requires strategic planning and execution of NYRR’s business development objectives including: sales solicitation across key categories, partnership marketing platform development and contract negotiation.  This role will primarily oversee new business sales as well as support renewals for existing partners.  This position will manage all media sales and be responsible for managing the broadcast partner sales efforts.

This position requires strong leadership skills to both manage direct reports internally as well as sales agency and media organizations externally.  Role will require ability to collaborate at all levels of the organization (especially with senior management) and with multiple clients who have varying objectives and ever-changing priorities.

Core Competencies:

  • Research and development of category insights and platforms for potential partners which are aligned with the mission of NYRR.
  • Strategy, solicitation, pipeline management, platform development and contract negotiation for six and seven figure sports and media partnerships
  • Management of sales agency to support pipeline development and pitching of clients
  • Management of pre-party and Expo sales strategy and execution
  • Management of domestic broadcast sales strategy and collaboration with network partners
  • Management of property assets, including inventory of assets and monetization strategy
  • Weekly race sales strategy and execution
  • Team development and support for up to 3 direct reports
  • Management of sales tracking documents including acting as the primary point of contact for sales agency and pipeline/funnel development. 

Candidate Profile:

Skills and Attributes:

  • Ten plus years experience in intellectual property driven sports sponsorship sales (inclusive of some media assets)
  • Strong relationships with decision makers at brands across categories along with key influencers with agencies.
  • Ability to sell via platforms to like-minded partners and understanding of complex agreement structures.
  • Resourcefulness and creativity in both corporate prospecting and partnership structure.
  • Proven track record managing end-to-end sales process for closing multi million dollar partnerships within the global sport marketplace.
  • Excellent writing skills, Word and PowerPoint skills
  • Ability and enthusiasm to work in a fast paced, ever changing environment
  • Energy and enthusiasm for NYRR’s mission and growth initiatives
  • Ability to work as a team player
  • Agility --ability to simultaneously work on a number of potential partnerships across categories
  • Ability to work early mornings, late nights and weekends as needed
     

Experience:

  • 10 + years experience in a strategic business development, sales or account management role specific to intellectual property driven partnerships.
