NWSL Awards L.A. Expansion Club To Star-Studded Group

The NWSL has awarded a L.A. expansion club to a majority woman-founded group that includes Academy Award winner Natalie Portman, media entrepreneur Julie Uhrman and venture capitalist Kara Nortman. Reddit co-Founder Alexis Ohanian led the investment for the expansion team, which will begin play in ‘22. With Racing Louisville FC scheduled to debut in '21, the addition of L.A. will bring the league to 11 total clubs. It is unclear at this time if and how the two L.A.-based MLS clubs are involved with the new NWSL team. The expansion club's name and home venue will be announced by the end of this year. There are a number of celebrities and star athletes attached to the team's 33-member founding investor group, which calls itself "Angel City."

Portman said, “We aim to build not only a winning team on the field, but also to develop a passionately loyal fan base. We also hope to make a substantive impact on our community, committing to extending access to sports for young people in Los Angeles through our relationship with the LA84 Foundation. Sports are such a joyful way to bring people together, and this has the power to make tangible change for female athletes both in our community and in the professional sphere.”
