Forty Under 40

Forty Under 40: Andrea Marini

deltatre

Few sports business executives are as worldly as Andrea Marini, who has lived and studied in London, Paris, Milan, Tokyo and Los Angeles, and who is fluent in Italian, English, Spanish and French and is now studying Japanese.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Group Chief Commercial Officer, Deltatre Group

Age: 33

Born: Milan

Education: University of Torino, B.A. and master’s; ESCP Europe, Master in Management; London City University, M.S.; Diplôme Grande École in Paris

Family: Wife, Ayumi Shiotani; daughter, Sofia Sakura Marini (18 months)

Advice to my 20-year-old self: Travel, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, respect people and listen.

Guilty pleasure? Good wine. Golf. Shoes. Cars.

Could not go a day without? My daughter, jokes and my Kindle.

Causes supported: Fondazione Francesco Rava — child adoption in Haiti; ADISCO — Italian association for umbilical cord donation.

Person in the industry I’d most like to meet: Tiger Woods.

Most unusual question asked while networking: If my eyelashes were real.

Sports industry needs to do a better job … : In promoting diversity. We’re moving in the right direction, but there’s still improvement needed.

Sports business leaders should be more mindful of … : The young generations.

Most adventurous thing I’ve done: Two months camping in Thailand when I was 18.

Learning cultural nuances has been a wonderful experience, he said, but has come with a steep learning curve. When he moved to the United States in 2016, it took some time to learn vernacular like “sounds good.”

“You have all these strange things you need to learn,” joked Marini, who now lives in London.

His deftness in fostering relationships across continents has been invaluable for the son of Luca Marini, Deltatre’s co-founder. He is responsible for strategy that transformed Deltatre into a global leader in sports media technology.

Deltatre now counts the NFL, MLB, the European Tour and several others as clients. Marini recently led the process that secured Bruin Sports Capital as the primary investor.

It fostered international growth and allowed for the acquisition of Massive Interactive in 2018, giving Deltatre a leadership position in streaming media services. Deltatre’s own enterprise value is now $1 billion.

Marini led the execution of the most successful digital launch in NFL history, encompassing all 32 team digital platforms; managed the re-engineering of MLB’s digital service for 250-plus digital sites worldwide; and directed the building of streaming service that is the backbone of Discovery’s $2 billion golf television service.

He is guided by advice from his father: Above all else, remain honest and transparent.
