Faces and Places: Dealmakers

Senior executives in sports and finance gathered at the Dealmakers in Sports conference on Dec. 4 in New York to discuss the modern sports economy and the opportunities and challenges of investing in the industry.

Zack Weiner, Overtime co-founder and president; Serent Capital VP Steve Marks; Wes Day, Teall Capital partner and chief strategy officer; and Inner Circle Sports VP Kyle Charters discussed with moderator Rick Alessandri of Turnkey Search (center) their investment strategies and catering to changing consumer habits.
Alan Kestenbaum (Atlanta Falcons) and Jon Ledecky (New York Islanders) discussed their personal experiences in team ownership.
The NFLPA’s Ahmad Nassar and Eric Winston described how now is the perfect time for the creation of OneTeam Partners, in partnership with the MLBPA and RedBird Capital, because of the increase in player empowerment.
ESPN’s Burke Magnus highlighted the XFL’s realistic approach to launching the new league, noting that founder Vince McMahon is “betting on his team and he’s betting on his product.”
Barstool Sports CEO Erika Nardini said that the key to continued expansion for the media company will be the addition of new talent.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, in a one-on-one discussion with SBJ Publisher and Executive Editor Abe Madkour, addressed the league’s difficulties in China. “It may be that this was inevitable, that ultimately, there was going to be a culture clash of a certain kind.”
Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts described the process of renovating Wrigley Field and learning to navigate Chicago politics throughout the renovation.
