Power Players: Naima Stevenson Starks and Kent Syverud
Naima Stevenson Starks
Vice President, Law, Policy and Governance
Chancellor and President
NCAA Committee on Sports Wagering
A Harvard-trained lawyer who has been on the NCAA’s legal team for 13 years, Stevenson Starks became the NCAA’s point person on sports betting when she took on a newly created role as liaison to its infractions committees in June. Not surprisingly, she quickly made clear publicly that she supports federal oversight of sports betting. Syverud chairs the NCAA’s 13-member ad hoc committee on sports wagering, which thus far has focused largely, though unsuccessfully, on getting schools to agree to a uniform policy on publicly disclosed injury reports.
