When Murren appeared alongside NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to announce the first official-status deal between a league and a sportsbook operator last year, it sent a clear message that MGM intended to play hard in the emerging U.S. market. Soon after came deals with MLB, the NHL and MLS, all negotiated by Butera, a longtime casino executive who also served four years as commissioner of the Arena Football League. Now comes the U.S. rollout of BetMGM, the online platform created by Roar, a $200 million joint venture between MGM and global sports betting operator GVC. Greenblatt, a former Ladbrokes and GVC executive whose business unit provided software to the Las Vegas sportsbooks, heads the joint venture.
