Television will help set pace of cannabis growth

A new ad category may develop as early as next year: Cannabis.

CbdMD President and Founder Caryn Dunayer said she expects leagues to allow athletes to use cannabis products first. “And then larger sponsorship opportunities” will come, she said during last week’s Octagon Sports Sponsorship Conference in New York.

“For example, the PGA [Tour] allows their athletes to currently use CBD, but they don’t allow the overall partnership or sponsorship of a CBD company yet,” she said. “Probably the two biggest reasons that things are being held up right now is the broadcasting and the marketing on linear television, and the safety aspect and making sure that everything is solid across the board.”

■ Fordham alums shine at big events: The biggest sports story in my hometown of Washington, D.C., last week was the fact that a team from the nation’s capital will participate in the World Series for the first time in 86 years.

Sports business veteran (and Fordham alum) Joe Favorito pointed out that the Nationals’ NLCS win over the Cardinals also marked the end of a good stretch for his fellow Rams as well. That’s because the longtime radio voice of the Nationals, Charlie Slowes, became the latest announcer from Fordham’s WFUV to call a championship series in the past five months. Mike Breen was on the mic for the NBA Finals on ABC; Jack Armstrong called the NBA Finals for TSN; and Ryan Ruocco was the lead voice for the Washington Mystics’ WNBA title earlier this month on ESPN.

“From 1982 through 1986 Fordham games were called by a core of students that includes Breen, Slowes, Michael Kay, Bob Papa, John Giannone (now calling Rangers), Paul Dottino (Giants pre- and postgame for WFAN) and Jack Curry (Yankees on YES),” Favorito wrote. “Not bad for some Bronx cheers."
