Basketball

The Atlanta Hawks named TIM WHANG senior director of partnership activation, TYLYN WHITEHEAD senior manager of guest experience and AMANDA WATSON events coordinator. Whang was director of partnership strategy and activation with the New York Mets; Whitehead was senior manager of fan experience for the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche and Colorado Mammoth; and Watson was the event services intern for Orlando Venues.

Colleges

Army West Point named KRISTINE FOWLER senior associate athletic director and senior woman administrator. Fowler was senior associate athletic director for sport administration at Indiana University.

Austin Peay State University promoted SARA ROBSON to associate athletic director for operations and named JORDAN HARMON assistant athletic director for development.

Appalachian State University named DOUG BANKS associate athletic director for development. Banks was senior director of development at the University of Nebraska.

Boston College promoted DAVE AYER to associate athletic director for business operations and JASON BAUM to senior associate athletic director for communications. Additionally, JM CAPARRO will now oversee facilities and event management, VAUGHN WILLIAMS will oversee marketing and fan engagement, and JOCELYN GATES will add human resources duties to her senior woman administrator role.

The University of Central Florida named JOHN HEISLER senior associate athletic director for strategic communications.

Furman University named JASON DONNELLY athletic director. Donnelly was senior associate athletic director and executive director of athletics development at Villanova University.

Hockey East Commissioner JOE BERTAGNA announced he will be stepping down from his post following the 2019-20 season.

Long Island University named WILLIAM MARTINOV JR. athletic director.

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette named LEE DE LEÓN executive director of the Ragin’ Cajuns Athletic Foundation and deputy athletic director. De León was athletic director at Abilene Christian University.

Merrimack College Athletic Director JEREMY GIBSON signed a five-year contract extension. Gibson has led Merrimack’s athletic programs for the past six years.

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference named KERRY FLYNN director of new media and video. Flynn was a multimedia assistant at Marist College.

The NCAA named AL SKINNER, GARY WATERS, TIM MILES and STEVE LAVIN commissioners for its inaugural year of the NCAA College Basketball Academy.

The University of Nebraska named GARRETT KLASSY senior deputy athletic director of external operations and JOHN JOHNSON senior deputy athletic director and chief of staff. Klassy was athletic director at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Johnson was senior associate athletic director at Washington State.

The University of New Orleans named DENA FREEMAN-PATTON deputy athletic director and chief operating officer. Freeman-Patton was deputy athletic director at California State University, Bakersfield.

Niagara University hired DEDRA PALMER as associate athletic director and senior woman administrator. Palmer was assistant commissioner for championships for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Providence College named MARTHA PERÉZ-SCHMITZ associate athletic director for business. Peréz-Schmitz was the business manager in the athletic department at Georgetown University.

Saint Peter’s University hired CHRIS ALIANO as associate athletic director for digital media and communications. Aliano was assistant athletic director for communications at Merrimack College.

Seton Hall University named BRYAN FELT director of athletics and recreation. Felt was athletic director at Saint Peter’s University.

The University of South Alabama promoted JACOB LUDWIKOWSKI to associate athletic director for development. Ludwikowski was assistant athletic director for development.

South Dakota State University announced a five-year contract extension for Athletic Director JUSTIN SELL, who has served as athletic director at SDSU since 2009. The extension runs through June 21, 2024.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville named TIM HALL athletic director. Hall was athletic director at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.

The Western Athletic Conference promoted RON LOGHRY to deputy commissioner and chief operating officer, DAVID CHAFFIN to senior associate commissioner, KRISTIN PREBLE to associate commissioner and senior woman administrator, MARLON EDGE to associate commissioner of compliance and governance, HOPE SHULER to associate commissioner of media services and CHRIS THOMPSON to assistant commissioner of media relations.

The College of William & Mary hired ANTHONY HENDERSON as senior associate athletic director, executive director of athletics advancement. Henderson was associate athletic director for development at the University of Akron.

Football

The Indianapolis Colts promoted KEVIN CONNORS to senior content creation specialist, MATT WILKENING to senior content creation specialist, HANNAH GLASER to manager of group sales, JUSTIN GLASS to manager of consumer sales, JOE FONDEROLI to senior director of events and operations, TREY MOCK to mascot program manager, CAROLINE COOKE to mascot coordinator and ALEX ROMANO to director of business intelligence.

The Pittsburgh Steelers named JASON KOBEDA assistant director of stadium operations. Kobeda was senior coordinatorof facility operations for Major League Baseball.

The XFL named RUSS GIGLIO director of player administration. Giglio was director of player personnel at the Alliance of American Football.

XFL Houston named CHARLES HAMPTON head of communications. Hampton was associate athletic director at Grand Canyon University.

XFL LA named JIM BARAL senior director of partnerships and LISA MILNER GOLDBERG head of communications. Baral was a consultant for the Los Angeles Chargers, while Goldberg spent 11 years at Swanson Communications, a public relations agency.

XFL NY named GINA ANTONIELLO head of communications. Antoniello was senior manager of communications at BSE Global.

XFL Tampa Bay named ALLEN BARRETT head of communications. Barrett was senior communications manager for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Marketing

Learfield IMG College named CHUCK ARNOLD general manager for Blue Raider Sports Properties at Middle Tennessee State University. Arnold was vice president of sales for the Charlotte Knights.

rEvolution named MATTHEW CARLE executive vice president of development.

Media

ACC Network named ESPN personality JORDAN CORNETTE as a college basketball analyst and anchor in studio. Along with his ACCN analyst and anchor duties, Cornette also will serve as a co-host for “Spain and Company” on ESPN Radio.

CBS Sports Network is bringing on former Notre Dame and Florida quarterback MALIK ZAIRE as a national college football game analyst. Zaire will remain with digital sports network Overtime.

Disney and ESPN Media Networks hired RYAN BLOOD as vice president of affiliate sales. Blood was director of content strategy and programming acquisitions for Fios.

ESPN’s JUSTIN CONNOLLY was promoted to Disney president of media distribution. Connolly was executive vice president of affiliate sales and marketing for Disney and ESPN Media Networks. He replaces JANICE MARINELLI, who is leaving her role as president of global sales and marketing for Disney’s direct-to-consumer and international division. ESPN also signed former NFL quarterback MARK SANCHEZ to be a college football analyst and former New England Patriots linebacker ROB NINKOVICH as an NFL analyst.

NBC Sports promoted SETH RUBINROIT to manager of content integrations and audio. Rubinroit was a content strategy specialist for NBC Sports Regional Networks.

Motorsports

International Speedway Corp. promoted BRIAN CRICHTON to president of Talladega Superspeedway. Crichton was the track’s vice president of marketing and sales.

Soccer

The Houston Dynamo and Dash named KATIE SCALLAN chief marketing officer. Scallan was director of marketing and corporate communications for The Friedkin Group.

Awards & Boards

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association will present DOUG CONANT with the 2019 ITA David A Benjamin Achievement Award.

TNT’s Stan Van Gundy, ESPN’s Tim Reed, NBA Playoffs and NFL Draft

On this week’s pod, SBJ’s Austin Karp has two Big Get interviews. The first is with TNT’s Stan Van Gundy as he breaks down the NBA Playoffs from the booth. Later in the show, we hear from ESPN’s VP of Programming and Acquisitions Tim Reed as the NFL Draft gets set to kick off on Thursday night in Motown. SBJ’s Tom Friend also joins the show to share his insights into NBA viewership trends.
