Pinin’ for Zion

The New Orleans Pelicans sold more than 3,000 season tickets in the first day after winning the NBA draft lottery and with it, the best chance of selecting Duke star Zion Williamson with the No. 1 pick in June. A video of the ticket sales staff’s raucous celebration after the announcement went viral.

Rough skies

The New York Jets fired GM Mike Maccagnan after he had overseen both the draft and free agency. Chief executive Christopher Johnson offered no specifics as to the reasons for the move, making this seem like just another example of the team’s often-criticized management decisions.

Study call

The NCAA announced it would form a group to study ways athletes could be compensated for use of their name, image and likeness — which would help address the organization’s growing perception problem — but will not consider paying athletes. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith will be among those in the group.
