People and Pop Culture

What's on your bookshelf?

From the classics to new releases, see what books some of sports’ hardest-working executives are reading during the summer months. And some even tackle the popular debate: paper versus digital.

Buffy Filippell

Founder, President | TeamWork Consulting

Reading now: I’m reading “The Sound of Music Story.” Anyone who knows me knows that this is my favorite movie. My wedding march was the same music from “The Sound of Music.”

A recent favorite: “A Man called Ove” is a terrific book. My brother recommended it from a Scandinavian author, Fredrik Backman. Backman also wrote “Britt-Marie Was Here.”

Scott Rosner

Academic Director | Columbia University Sports Business Program

A recent favorite: Ken Shropshire and Collin Williams’ “The Miseducation of the Student Athlete.”

Paper or digital: Always paper.

What’s next: Sit down and write the long overdue third edition of my creatively titled textbook, “The Business of Sports,” with Shropshire.

Tina Shah

SVP, Business Affairs | Turner Sports

A recent favorite: “The Myth of the Nice Girl: Achieving a Career You Love Without Becoming a Person You Hate.”

Paper or digital: Both. Prefer paper but environmental guilt results in mostly digital.

Greg Sankey

Commissioner | SEC

A recent favorite: “U2: The Definitive Biography,” by John Jobling and “Lead Yourself First,” by Raymond M. Kethledge and Michael S. Erwin.

What’s next: “Everybody, Always: Becoming Love in a World Full of Setbacks and Difficult People,” by Bob Goff.

Alton Byrd

VP of Business Operations | Long Island Nets

Reading now: “The Energy Bus,” by Jon Gordon.

Paper or digital: Digital when I travel. Paper at home.

What’s next: “By the Seat of My Pants: Humorous Tales of Travel and Misadventure,” by Lonely Planet Publishing.

Mike Mulvihill

EVP, Research, League Operations and Strategy | Fox Sports

Reading now? “Siren Song: My Life in Music,” by Seymour Stein. Breezy, engaging memoir by legendary A&R man who signed the Talking Heads, The Ramones and many others.

A recent favorite: “The Attention Merchants,” by Tim Wu. Thought-provoking and highly relevant look at the past and future of the content industries.

David Schwab

SVP | Octagon

Reading now: “Negotiating the Impossible.”

A recent favorite: “Masters of Modern Soccer: How the World’s Best Play the Twenty-First-Century Game,” by Grant Wahl. Had to read it before the World Cup.

What’s next: “Field of Valor,” written by fellow Miami University alum Matt Betley. I had him on my Beyond High Street podcast recently.

Karen Brodkin

EVP, Content Strategy and Partnerships | Endeavor

Reading now: This summer, I decided to read Joan Didion’s latest book of short stories, “South and West,” and then reread a bunch of her iconic books that I had previously read years ago.

A recent favorite: A novel by Jesmyn Ward called, “Sing, Unburied, Sing.” I also LOVED the Bruce Springsteen autobiography.

Michelle Micone

SVP, Consumer Products |NFL

Reading now: “How Women Rise,” by Sally Helgesen and Marshall Goldsmith. For fun, I’m reading “Beartown,” by Fredrik Backman, the story of how a hockey team influences an entire town’s identity.

A recent favorite: “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” And also “The Travelers,” by Chris Pavone. I couldn’t put it down.

Danit Aronson

Chief Partnership Officer | CSM LeadDog

Reading now: “Ender’s Game.”

A recent favorite: “The Handmaid’s Tale.” [It is] such an addictive story with a strong message of female empowerment and commentary on our society and what people are capable of when compelled by fear. Scary. Shocking. Exciting. I’m loving it!

What’s next: “Anna Karenina.”
