Voices of Diversity: Michael Yim

Define diversity to you; why is it important? The first thing that comes to mind when I hear workplace diversity is ethnicity and gender, but I think it’s broader than that. It refers to a variety of experiences and differences between people within an organization from race and religion to personality and education. A diversified organization has a balanced workforce that can place a multicultural lens on issues and opportunities.

Opportunities missing in sports: Like any other industry, I believe unfair stereotyping exists in sports when it comes to opportunities for job candidates. A more open-minded approach and selection process will help create a more diversified industry. That said, I think the golf world is beginning to mimic the real world. We’re seeing players and personnel from really diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Call to action for sports: I don’t think there is an agency or league that doesn’t consider themselves “global.” But to be global, you have to foster diversity at all levels, from competitors to executives. Develop a hiring strategy that recruits from multiple regions. People who look, speak and think differently than you are likely to add value to your business.
