Reader Survey 2017: How you see it

From the top sports business story to the role of sports in society, here’s how you voted in the 13th annual SBJ/SBD Reader Survey

The NBA scored plenty of admiration in results from the 13th annual SBJ/SBD Reader Survey.

The league led the way when readers were asked to identify the hottest sports property, racking up 64 percent of the votes. More than half of voters said that if they represented a sponsor, the NBA is the sports property they’d want to align with the most. And Commissioner Adam Silver garnered 64 percent of the vote for most effective commissioner.

Those are just some of the highlights from this year’s survey. Among the rest:

POLITICAL FOOTBALL: Readers voted “President Donald Trump vs. the NFL” as the year’s biggest sports business story.

SUPPORT THE CAUSE: Just over half of readers said they think the sports industry should play a larger role in social causes. The percentage rose sharply when looking at votes by women and millennials.

SELL!: If ESPN were a stock, nearly half of readers said they’d sell it.

AVOIDING THE HITS: More than two-thirds of voters said they would be uncomfortable with their child playing tackle football. Nearly a quarter said injury concerns are the biggest threat to youth sports.

PAUSE BUTTON: More than half said they are cautious about esports’ growth potential and nearly a third said they ignore esports altogether.

SOCIAL STATUS: More than half of readers said they monitor or post to Twitter every day. Forty-three percent said they do the same with Facebook.

BAD MOVE: Nearly 70 percent of voters said it was a poor decision by the NFL to move the Chargers to Los Angeles, while nearly 60 percent were OK with the decision to move the Raiders to Las Vegas. For the second year in a row, readers identified the NFL as the sports property headed in the wrong direction.

The online survey was fielded from Oct. 16 through Nov. 3. Turnkey Intelligence again provided the technical work and tabulated the results.
