Forty Under 40: What’s the best sporting event you’ve attended?

We asked each of the Forty Under 40:

What’s the best sporting event you’ve attended?

Seth Bacon: 2015 Belmont Stakes — witnessing American Pharoah’s drought-breaking Triple Crown win.

Derek Belch: In high school, I attended Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Anaheim Ducks and New Jersey Devils. Live hockey, especially playoff hockey, is a thrill to attend in person.

Ilan Ben-Hanan: USC vs. Notre Dame, 2005 (The “Bush Push” game).

Jimmy Bruns: Texas High School State Basketball Tournament.

Lisa Campos: 2016 NCAA Men’s Cross Country Championships because NAU won its first ever national championship.

Daniel Cherry III: March Madness.

Jason Cohen: Game 1 of the 2000 World Series (Subway Series, Yankees-Mets).

Sakiya Daniel: Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals when Mark McGwire hit his 61st home run.

Will Dean: France (43) vs. New Zealand (36), 1999 Rugby World Cup, Twickenham Stadium, U.K.

Rob DeAngelis: 2015 Final Four — Wisconsin beats undefeated Kentucky.

Bill Fagan: 2007 World Series Game 2 at Fenway Park with my dad.

Cole Gahagan: 2004 LSU national championship game.

Rocky Harris: The best sporting event I’ve worked is Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston. We were the host of the event and it was extremely memorable because of Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction, and a record 37 points scored in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning field goal in the final seconds.

Jeff Ianello: Derek Jeter’s last game at Yankee Stadium, with my dad and two best friends.

Martin Jarmond: Buckeyes winning 2014 CFP National Championship.

Katherine Johnson: My own Olympic Games (Athens 2004).

Nick Kelly: 2016 World Series Game 7.

Elena Klau: League of Legends Semifinals, Madison Square Garden.

Brandon Lloyd: My daughter’s soccer match on the WAYA fields in Austin.

J.B. Lockhart: Nadal vs. Djokovic, U.S. Open.

Olek Loewenstein: 2014 World Cup for many reasons.

Matthew Nussbaum: USA vs. Canada, men’s ice hockey, gold medal round, 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

David Oxfeld: I have been fortunate to go to a ton of top events, but my two favorite are arcane and also include the story behind them/full day: Game 5 of the 2002 Eastern Conference First Round, Nets vs. Pacers; Michigan vs. Ohio State, 2016.

Dan Parise: As a Pats fan, maybe the most recent Super Bowl, but riding in the parade afterward was also special.

Anthony Perez: 2009 NBA Finals (Magic vs. Lakers).

Ashwin Puri: 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in San Antonio, Memphis vs. Kansas.

Alex Radetsky: Yankees/Red Sox 2003 ALCS Game 7; the Aaron Boone game. The wrong team won from my point of view, but the old Yankee Stadium was really rocking.

Ann Rodriguez: The 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Jeffrey Roth: Michigan vs. Notre Dame in Ann Arbor under the lights (first night game in Ann Arbor). Michigan won by 4 on a score with 2 seconds left, and Michigan came back from being down 24-7 in the fourth.

Connor Schell: Game 5, Royals-Mets, 2015.

Brandon Schneider: 2015 NBA Finals Game 6 — Warriors at Cleveland.

Vishal Shah: I’m biased, but the Super Bowl.v Gretchen Sheirr: 2004 Sugar Bowl — LSU national championship.

Tobias Sherman: Monday Night Football 11/15/93 Pittsburgh Steelers vs. the Buffalo Bills where Gary Jones was lighting people up.

Justin Toman: University of Michigan hockey games.

Jeremy Walls: The Dolphins playing in London at Wembley Stadium, or the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Both unique and special events. Danny White: The next one.

Chip Wile: The Daytona 500.

Mike Zabik: Super Bowl 51. Best Super Bowl ever. I am a big Pats fan and it was great to watch the GOAT and team make such an amazing comeback.

Tim Zue: The thrill of victory at Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS at Yankee Stadium, a stark contrast from experiencing the agony of defeat at Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS the previous year.
