Timeline: The long journey back

1994
December: On Christmas Eve, both the Raiders and Rams play their last home games in Los Angeles.

1995

Former owner Georgia Frontiere signs an agreement to move the team to St. Louis in 1995.

April: NFL owners approve the Rams’ move to St. Louis for the 1995 season.

August: League owners approve the Raiders’ move to Oakland beginning with the 1995 season.

1999
March: The NFL awards Los Angeles an expansion franchise contingent on a stadium site and ownership group. By October, a deal is not reached and the expansion team is awarded to Houston.

2003
May: NFL owners agree to contribute up to $10 million for a new stadium in Carson, Calif.

2005
November: Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, after a private meeting with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, announces a preliminary agreement has been reached to bring a team back to L.A.

2008

April: Majestic Realty Chairman and CEO Ed Roski unveils plans for a proposed NFL stadium in the City of Industry.

2009
October: California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signs a bill granting final approval to an NFL stadium proposal in the City of Industry, allowing Roski to proceed with his $800 million project as soon as he secures an NFL franchise.

2010
April: Wasserman Chairman and CEO Casey Wasserman and AEG President and CEO Tim Leiweke propose a privately financed, retractable-roof stadium near the Staples Center.

2011
January: L.A.-based Farmers Insurance Group announces a 30-year, $600 million to $700 million naming-rights contract for the proposed AEG stadium.

August: The L.A. City Council approves the proposed AEG stadium project 12-0 with a plan to open a stadium as early as 2016.

2014
January: St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke buys 60 acres adjacent to the Forum in Inglewood for approximately $100 million.

2015
February: The Inglewood City Council approves plans for a stadium built by Kroenke/Stockbridge Capital Group.

February: The Chargers and Raiders announce a proposal for a privately financed, $1.7 billion stadium in Carson, Calif.

March: AEG abandons its stadium proposal near Staples Center.

October: In St. Louis, National Car Rental agrees to a 20-year, $158 million naming-right deal with the St. Louis Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority for a proposed St. Louis football stadium.

2016
January: The Raiders, Rams and Chargers officially file for relocation to Los Angeles beginning with the 2016 season.

January: NFL owners vote 30-2 in a secret ballot to ratify the Rams’ relocation to L.A. NFL owners Dan Rooney, John Mara and Jerry Richardson backed the Carson stadium, while Jerry Jones led a successful campaign to win support for the Inglewood development. The Chargers are given an option to relocate and join the Rams in Inglewood.

July: The Rams open training camp at the University of California, Irvine.

August: Los Angeles hosts its first NFL game in 21 seasons as the Rams play the Cowboys at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the team’s temporary home stadium until the 2019 season.
